Left-lane slowpokes drive you crazy? (Some states are cracking down.)
MSN Money ^ | 12/10/2008 | Christopher Solomon

In these days of longer commutes and simmering tempers, nothing seems to set off already-testy motorists like the left-lane camper -- the guy or gal who drives in the passing lane and bars faster drivers from easily passing. Web sites have cropped up to educate other drivers, or to vent. There's a (somewhat painful) YouTube song called "Keep Right."

Even bigwigs get frustrated. Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell, weary of having his limo slowed down by such left-lane pokies, ordered an aide to have the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission install signs a few years ago reading "Keep Right, Pass Left. It's the Law."

And now some states are cracking down on left-lane campers, both to keep traffic moving and to tamp down the road rage that goes from zero-to-60 faster than ever before.

That's not just a pretext. Last year, a driver was arrested on Interstate 79 outside Pittsburgh after allegedly brandishing a semiautomatic pistol at a driver who was on his tail.

>>well then if the limit is 60 and i am doing 70 and someone wants to pass me then they are also breaking said laws...so give us both a ticket...me for speeding at 70 and blocking the lane and the follower for speeding and following to close....in general people need to slow down and stop being idiots....<<

You lost me there somewhere. I mean, I agree that we “could” both get tickets, but since you are the one in front, and blocking me, you are the one that will get a ticket for speeding aproximately 90% of the time.

No cop has ever successfully pulled me over while he was also trying to pull over someone else.

The corollary to this whole subject is that if a driver is in the far right lane going the speed limit, or even just slower than all the traffic in the lanes to the left, don’t get behind him and ride his bumper to try to push him to speed up. He is in the correct lane. People do this all the time in Atlanta, and when I am the one in the slow lane, I wish I had a little sign pointing the tailgating driver to move left.

There was the Bond flick in Japan in which a helicopter picked up the car and dropped it in the sea. It is my dream job to remove these idiots from the road.

There is an old moview where WC Fields wins a large sum of money. He spends it all on cars and uses them all to run slow drivers off the road.

>>If you don’t like the speed limit (which is the same in both lanes), lobby to get them changed/raised.<<

This thread has nothing whatsoever to do with speed limits.

>>In any event, people will run up on the right side of the road just behind the “move left” sign so they can sneak in and get ahead of half the line.

I always make a point to leave only a tiny gap between me and the car ahead of me so those people can’t move over.<<

I’m actually both of you. I pull in as late as possible. It is only common courtesy to both lanes.

But that said, if I see a guy pull out into the free lane to pass a few cars, I will NOT be the one he pulls in front of.

I’ve actually done that, gotten in front of them, then slowed down to keep them in the “gap” between the two lines in the right lane. Eventually ALL the cars that were behind them pass us on the right. I then accelerate to the speed I wanted to go.

Ahhh, in basketball terms, you 'set the pick' so that the whole team would benefit. Good move!

That is true. It’s the idiot in the left lane that needs to be blown off the road. In a figurative sense of course.

>>That told me right there alot about that motorcyclist.
First if all, he’s never been down, or else he wouldn’t be dressed like that.
Secondly, he hasn’t been riding long... never had the crap scared out of him by doing stupid stuff like that. He’s one that will have to learn the hard way.<<

Actually, when I had a bike (I’m between them right now) I would have done that. You are right on number one, but not number two. I was always watching other cars for erratic mobves. “Assume you are invisible” was my motto. It saved me from many crashes and probably my life a couple of times.

Thing is, if that cyclist really knew what he was doing, that move was not dangerous. It just “looked” dangerous. A lot of moves on the road are like that. And sometimes the opposite is true. In the name of being “safe” people do very dangerous things.

Slamming on your brakes at an amber light comes to mind.

Atlanta is a unique blemish in the south. Chock full of yankees who have sucessfully escaped the northeast, they have brought their driving habits with them. I always try to get through Atlanta before 06:00 hours in order to avoid the worst traffic. If there were an actual functional bypass, I'd always take it. But 285 is even worse than just driving through the 'belly of the beast' on I-75.

“I don’t think anyone is arguing you should move over for somebody speeding.”

Yes, we are. I, like most people on the highway, am usually going over the speed limit - in the right hand lane. When I encounter cars going slower than me, I use the left hand lane to pass and then get back in the right hand lane. It’s not complicated. Tooling along in the left hand lane for no particular reason is just plain lazy driving.

Some people “pace” other cars.

This is easy to see when cruise control is on. Many drivers are heavily influenced by the speed of other drivers. And you can also tell who else has their cruise control on. Human perception of speed changes constantly.

You said — “No cop has ever successfully pulled me over while he was also trying to pull over someone else.”

Ohhh..., I’ve seen it done... It’s quite a maneuver. A trooper came up on a line of cars (about five) that were speeding together (you know how that goes... LOL...).

He went up to them, one at a time, with his lights and siren on, and when they pulled one lane over, he very aggressively motioned them to go over to the side of the road and then rushed up to the next car, did the same — and so on, until he got all five cars over to the side.

That was a surprising maneuver, to be sure. I’ve only seen it done once in my lifetime... LOL...

Problem is, they probably can't give a citation based on your testimony. It's essentially your word against his and he's innocent until proven guilty in the court of law. But what they could have done was pull him over and give him a lecture for 10 minutes.
