Schwarzenegger warns of financial 'Armageddon'
Sacramento Bee ^ | 12/10/8 | Steve Wiegand

Posted on 12/10/2008 12:41:06 PM PST by SmithL

Saying California is "headed toward a financial Armageddon," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger blistered the Legislature today for failing to come to grips with the state's deteriorating budget situation.

"The Legislature acts as if we had a $30 billion surplus," Schwarzenegger told a hastily called news conference at the Capitol. "When you have a crisis, the most important thing to do is make a decision."

Instead, the governor said, legislators accomplished nothing after he called them into special session the day after the Nov. 4 election to address a package of budget cuts, tax increases and economic stimulus plans he proposed.

"They met, they debated, they postured and they did nothing," he said. "They didn't deal with one of those issues, and that was after being three months late with (approving) the budget this year. If that isn't a shameful performance, I don't know what is."

Schwarzenegger stood beside a cardboard clock labeled "Legislature's Failure to Act: Day 35," and said the date refers to the time since he called the special session in November. He said the clock would be on display outside his office to remind Californian's of the Legislature's failure.

The governor said that because of the lack of a deal, the $11.2 billion deficit in the current fiscal year's budget has climbed to $14.8 billion. Moreover, he said, it's growing at the rate of $40 a second, or $40 million per day.

"I'm frustrated," he said. "We have a system where we rely on the 120 legislators to make those decisions. I cannot make them stay here, I cannot lock them into the building, I don't have those kinds of powers.

"Believe me, I would do it otherwise."

He was. And he didn’t. There are some very tough decisions to be made, because the people of the state of California didn’t do their job - elect representatives who had a clue that is. Nobody wants to be the bad guy, and especially not the first to spell out the kind of cuts that really need to happen. It’s all bad news for the RATs and their fellow parasites. Of course they depend on the votes of those parasites to stay in power, so no surprise when they ignore reality. Time will come, though, when the money runs out.

“The Legislature acts as if we had a $30 billion surplus,”

I know! You’d think they’d quit funding stem cell research, buying new cars for all the congress critters, and open up our coasts for some oil exploration!

They’re in deep denial.

I don’t blame Arnold. That’s too easy. I’m sure he’s part of the problem but the larger problem is the Democratic stranglehold in that State.

Burning villages, raping women.

In past, during war. Not now.

Where will this lead? At some point, the welfare offices will close (even briefly), someone will broadcast "it's time" in another language, and La Raza will move to make CaliforniaAzltan a free nation.

Um, maybe Arnold should crack down on illegal immigration that’s putting a drain on the state?

If I stilled lived there, I would blame him..he has been on a “green” spending spree since he was elected... if he cut those programs the state would save a whole lot of money. He was also against closing off the border with Mexico and CA has a huge welcome sign for all things illegal.. which costs every man, woman and child in that state.

"...it's growing at the rate of $40 a second, or $40 million per day."

Hmmm....there's some bad math here. There are 86,400 seconds per day X $40 = $3,456,000.

Not 40 million.

I’m a life-long, native St. Louisan, but a long-time, now ex-fan of the magnificent Golden State.

When I see what has become of this state of such great natural bounty, entrepreneurial spirit and creative energy I think of Aesop’s Fables and killing the Goose that Laid the Golden Egg.

The Beach Boys’ “We’ve Been Having Fun All Summer Long” is no more.
