The Catholic Campaign for Human Development was a relic of the '70s, when Catholic leaders thought it would be great if they instituted a policy of supporting secular organizations.
The CCHD funded a lot of stuff by radical organizer Saul Alinsky. Askel5 covered this a lot in the FR archives, if they're still available, and the Wanderer newspaper did a lot of research too.
