“I worked for President Reagan in the service, before the Air Base gig. I’ve talked with both gentlemen hundreds of times. Both of them were GREAT people, especially President Reagan. I miss him much as I miss my father.”

The lady who cuts my hair is named Shirley and she loved Reagan. Her husband was head of security at the Hotel Del in 1964 and Reagan was visiting and Shirley had her own shop in the hotel. She offered to do Nancy’s hair but her services weren’t needed. She ended up making lemonade for the officials viewing some type of parade in the area and Reagan was there with Nancy. Shirley said he thanked her for the lemonade and as she was walking away he yelled “Hey Shirley!! Can I have some more of that lemonade?” She tells that story like it was just last week. I guess she met quite a few dignitaries back in the day.

They were both as common as an old shoe, yet dignified. Many Hollywood people, as you might imagine, aren’t like that, especially today.

What the hell is this going to cost Americans?

Not nearly as much as his presidency.

This is total bullsh1t. Shouldn’t have any more security than any other inauguration. Because it is what it is, just an inauguration.

Speaking of disasters expected in the DC SMSA if 5 million people come here to watch Obama, now you’ll have to bring your own doughnuts~!

I would not be surprised if there happened to be over a million stalled cars and trucks blocking the hiways into DC, think of all the poor pilgrimage people that cannot visit the American Mecca.

I saw Ronnie’s temper back in the early 70’s when I worked on a show he did. Not terribly dignified that day. Matter of fact, his security people extracted him from the scene and hustled out of the studio. But I guess your common as an old shoe description is accurate, he wasn’t given to a lot of pretense.

Somewhere around here I have the little secret service lapel tag from the 84 campaign.

This image is for the left wing Obama lurkers, yes we know you are here, and you are planning on being in DC for this inauguration? Just think about what your children will ask you in the future about why you had to re-peat history.

Everybody has bad days, and I would never submit President Reagan for beatification. Compared to today's Hollywood and D.C. crowd, that generation was at least made up of adults.

“Gee, I thought the majority loved him.
Why would they need so much defense?”

Because America’s a downright mean country (according to Michelle Obama) and we’re all just a bunch of racists that didn’t vote for Obama. They’re probably afraid of us all descending on Washington in our white KKK robes. /s

"Hundreds of thousands of cops to provide security for Obamas inauguration security?"

Cool!! This would be a great time for a nation wide crime spree.

They hope that allowing all night drinking will attract the mobs. They want a big number to highlight the Ob.

I can't say that I'm really surprised. Nowadays there is always the threat of possible terrorism and Obama being the first African-American president has to also be factored in.

These are some of the precautions that were taken four years ago at President Bush's second inauguration. As far as security, as it relates to the president is concerned, I think that those in charge will always err on the side of caution and every subsequent inauguration post 9/11 is likely to outdo the one before.

Security planning for Bush inaugural at unmatched level

By Sari Horwitz and Spencer S. Hsu

The Washington Post

WASHINGTON — An unprecedented level of security will frame President Bush's second inauguration, with officials planning to use thousands of police from across the country, new screening technology for inaugural guests and a military contingent that could include a combat brigade of up to 4,000 troops.

Security always is tight on Inauguration Day, but it will be magnified for the first inauguration since the Sept. 11 attacks. Law-enforcement officials have been preparing for months to protect U.S. and world leaders and citizens who attend.

As tens of thousands of people come to Washington to watch the Jan. 20 swearing in, the city will be filled with military personnel, FBI agents in full SWAT outfitting, snipers on rooftops and scores of bomb-detecting dogs.

Air defenses have been strengthened to prevent intruder aircraft, and sensors will be deployed throughout the area to detect biological, chemical or radiological material.

About 2,000 out-of-town officers will help with security and traffic details. Undercover officers will work the crowds, and D.C. police officers will be posted every six to eight feet along the parade route.

Plans call for sturdier barriers and more checkpoints and metal detectors along the parade route than in previous years. Officials also are setting up a higher-security ticketing and credentialing system for some events, to prevent people from using counterfeit materials to gain access to balls and more restricted areas.
