Contact: Emanuel spoke with Blago “on multiple occasions” about Senate seat
Hot Air ^ | December 12, 2008 | Ed Morrissey

The attempt by President-elect Barack Obama to distance himself from the scandal erupting in Illinois took a big hit last night with this exclusive report from Chicago’s Fox affiliate. Sources within the investigation say that Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s chief of staff, spoke with Governor Rod Blagojevich on “multiple occasions” about the Senate succession that Blagojevich had wanted to sell to the highest bidder — and that Emanuel will likely be on the FBI wiretaps:

(VIDEO AT LINK)

On the surface, this makes sense. The notion that Obama and his team had nothing to say about the Senate appointment and had no contact whatsoever with Blagojevich was ridiculous. Emanuel, with his ties to Illinois politics and his status as Obama’s right-hand man, would make the most likely candidate to handle those negotiations.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that Emanuel knew about Blagojevich’s efforts to extort payment for the selection, but it puts a damper on the idea that Emanuel tipped off the feds, too. It wouldn’t take “multiple” meetings for Emanuel to decide to squeal. If Emanuel continued meeting with Blagojevich, that indicates some kind of negotiating was happening, and that would strongly suggest that Emanuel was working on Blagojevich’s terms. It’s still possible that Emanuel was working with the feds, but why stay silent about it now? They’ve already arrested Blagojevich. Emanuel could now say, “I helped Patrick Fitzgerald when I saw something wrong and worked with them to get him to make explicit statements,” rather than spend this week ducking reporters. The “sources within the investigation” would hardly want to make a cooperating witness look bad, either. Emanuel has been acting like someone advised him to keep quiet to keep from making incriminating public statements, and this may be the reason why.

I agree this is bigger than Watergate (which was the leftist media out to destroy President Nixon.) Today's media will run cover for Obama & crew, while using Blago as the only fall guy.

Emanuel & Blago & Obama = rat = worm = weasel.

John Kass was on O’Reilly saying that a lot of dominos could fall if Blago talks.

Blago OR Harris. Either one of them could take down a lot of people. Somehow I can't see Blago being happy with rotting in jail when he might very well be in a position to get lighter sentencing if he starts "singing". Kinda like Tony Rezko (also whom I've said here on this board had a LOT to gain by talking to the Feds).

If Obama is this crooked before he takes office can you imagine what it will be like for four long years?!

The thing is..... we here in the Chicago/Illinois area have known/suspected that this kind of thing was going on, and I'm talking for DECADES. (My dad's best friend in central Illinois got turned upside down and literally "shaken" til the money fell out of his pockets and this was in the 1920's by the Chicago machine thugs who took trips downstate to squeeze out what they could from the hinter-flat-lands.)

But until they (any of them - by the way) actually got caught on tape?!!!

I was actually laughing with relief when a friend of mine sent me a TXT message on Tues. morning talking about Blago being picked up by the police that morning.

"Well, it's about time!" was my kneejerk reaction.

The Office of the President-elect has been forever tarnished.

Even before before being actually elected!

What's the Illinois equivalent of Arkancide?

Cement shoes in the Chicago River . . . or Lake Michigan.

I think Emanuel's problem—and I'm speculating—is that he relayed proposals Blagojevich was throwing out to Obama. Some of these proposals likely constitute solicitation of bribery. By being Obama’s negotiator and courier Emanuel is drawn inside a criminal conspiracy. Even if he never took the Governor's proposed deals seriously the wire transcripts may not be so nuanced. I think that is why Emanuel is ducking the press and exhibiting bizarre behavior.

Emmanuel has a history of bizarre behavior. Sending dead fish to political opponents, stabbing tables with knives,......

nHave to disagree. Dems have been saying for 8 years that Bush is a crook, Hitler, evil, anything they can throw at him, yet did not have the gonads to try and impeach.

The democrats attempted to impeach Bush in the arena of public opinion. They failed there even though Bush's numbers were as low as they are. They failed because the public recognized the triviality of the lefts claims for impeachment. There has yet to be any charge levied that rises to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors.

If the guy is a DEM the dumbed down public will put up with a crook, especially if he is The Messiah.

The dumbed down public elected BH0. Even the most ill informed among us recognizes corruption and is less than tolerant of that. While the DBM will initially cover for BH0, don't be so confident they will be in it for the long haul. When it becomes more than apparent BH0's hands were all over this, the dinosaur media will abandon ship as they will recognize their survival is a stake. Normally a sinking ship will take only its captain so to speak.

Now on the other hand Nixon was one of those eveil Republicans. Nixon's dishonesty is what did him in -the cover up of an insignificant petty break in.

Nixon came to the party way to late. Yes, his crime was the cover up and subsequent lying of that. Nixon was hated by the left media and they saw the opportunity to remove him as payback for the Alger Hiss debacle. Nixon' fate was sealed long before he became aware of the break in. Do not misunderstand me, I am not condoning his actions. To the contrary he engaged in tactics that were impeachable and stained the office of President then and to somewhat an extent yet today.

The dishonesty of zer0bama seems to have no effect on the public - zero, zip, nada.

Here is where I take umbrage with your theory. Yes, the dinosaur media will cover for BH0 but, not for the duration of the scandal. They eventually will be less than supportive as more of the facts come out. This is not over and the Fitzpatrick investigation will not be swept away even if Blago resigns. He was charged, a complaint filed and the due process laws of the justice system will play out revealing more of the facts of this case. It is in the interest of our country that however damaging this is, to a post election president select or a sitting president, the honor and integrity of the office will be preserved. The morons and idiots who will support BH0 regardless are a small fraction of the overall public. The country is still center right.

For the most part the media is covering for their favorite DEM just like they always do - this will NEVER EVER be a Watergate circus. Blogo will disappear and the media will put this story to bed so that zer0bama and his media can get on with the really important stuff of trying to unify the country and to regain goodwill in the community of the world.

The media of the Nixon era had little opposing competition. The new media of today and the availability of vast amounts of news sources will prohibit the DBM from complete protection of Hussein. Yes, they will steadfastly attempt to protect but the longevity of believability will fade as the investigation continues, facts become public record and an ultimate conviction results. This is long from being over and unlike Watergate, is far more complex and corrupt. It is the exposition of the political corruptness at its essence. The new media, like the old media focused it effort against Nixon, will see this as payback for Watergate. Trust me, this is just getting started and there is a long way to go....

Yeah, isn’t going to prison like a rite of passage for Illinois governors? My grandfather was a federal prison guard, and he had Otto Kerner in his cell block. Said he was a nice guy...

Well shall see - I hope you analysis is correct. I personally have no faith the DBM is going to do anything that will hurt the zer0bama from becoming the first 1/2 black President. Wasn't it My Job Is To Make Obama Presidency A Success

Yes, the new media will have a hand in not allowing this scandal to go unoticed, but the bulk of Americans still get thier news on MTV, John Stewart or Conan O'Brien shows.

Nor do I and to a lesser extent, I have little faith in the ill informed electorate. My point is that all things being equal from the media of the Watergate era to today, there are more sources of news available today giving critical thinking Americans more choices. There is an element of the public who will for whatever reason choose to be told what to believe and if I were to place a bet on the 08 election, it would be the 0 campaign targeted these less informed and ignorant people as their constituency of voters as evidenced by the Zogby video made election day.

regardless of DBM bias, deep down they do love a scandal and will feed news stories to avoid a ratings loss to other networks and news agencies. Bottom line, this story has legs and the left is frantically trying to cut them off before the walk becomes a flat out run....

Does anyone think Blago will roll over on anyone in order to avoid a long jail sentence? I don’t see him as a “good soldier”.

John Kass was on O’Reilly saying that a lot of dominos could fall if Blago talks.

There is talk that Blago will resign tomorrow. The RATS probably made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
