Global Warming's Poor, Huddled Masses
IBD Editorials ^ | December 12, 2008 | DAVID A. RIDENOUR

Barack Obama doesn't have a mandate for his global warming policies. He doesn't even have a mandate from his most fervent supporters.

Last month, President-elect Obama promised to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020 — approximately a 16% cut — and then to cut them an additional 80% by 2050.

That's a 68% cut from today's levels and would mean trimming U.S. carbon emissions to roughly where they were in 1905.

Think about 1905 for a minute. There were just 77,988 registered vehicles in the U.S., compared to over 250 million today — or just one vehicle for every 3,200 now. Less than 10% of the country had electricity, fewer than five percent of households had electric clothes-washers, only a handful of Americans had dishwashers, and no one had air conditioning.

Life expectancy was only 47 years, about 30 years shorter than today — although it may have seemed a whole lot longer than that.

Reducing America's greenhouse gases to 1905 levels, even including the substantial energy efficiency gains already made and those projected for the future, would be very costly and require a wrenching transformation of our way of life.

But don't take my word for it.

Barack Obama suggested as much himself, saying, "under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket . . . whatever the industry was, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money . . . (and) they will pass that . . . on to the consumers."

Likely not! Life in Afganistan won't look much worse. Because to decrease overall figures, we of the taxpayer class would have to have much less than 1905 standards so that Algore, Obama, Edwards and others can continue their lavish lifestyle and still meet his projections.

Didn’t read the article, just the excerpt but did the author discuss the fact that those emmision levels in 1905 were produced with about 1/4th the current population? Less industry, fewer cars, fewer people etc and Obama proposes to take us back to 1905 levels? If you give this just a little thought it’s obvious there’s only one real way to achieve his goal.

Not going to happen. Cuts of that magnitude haven't even happened in the EU and Canada, the two most faithful believers in the global warming scam.

‘Tis true that one of the predictable outcomes of leftist control of government is mass murder. That’s been the case since the start of leftist politics during the French Revolution right through to William Ayers considering the deaths of 25 million Americans.

The interesting problem (from a cold, spectulative viewpoint) is how that is to be achieved. Firearms are everywhere, and confiscation of weapons would be either spotty or ignored. Just kicking in the door in the spirit of Stalin has the potential for really going wrong quickly.

In that regard, I have two guesses.

1. Obama and his supporters are just throwing out meaningless numbers in the hopes of looking good, at least according to their own standards. This is another typical leftist strategy; tell the world that the trains run on time, and before you know it, everyone accepts it as a fact.

2. Mass murder disguised as something else. Several well-placed nukes could get rid of millions in an instant. Blame “the terrorists.” Announce martial law. The folks with firearms would be busy looking for terrorists; harnessing that energy could be used to kill more Americans, assuming that the terrorist selected by the government would mirror people already in the community. Remember the face of Emmanuel Goldstein in “1984.”

Now if that’s not bleak, I don’t know what is. I’m assuming that they’re just making up numbers that sound good and they really don’t know what they hell they’re doing, and the second guess is just a Tom Clancy novel.

It would take a lot to incite another American Revolution but this could fit the bill. Of course, BJ Clinton signed Kyoto and the Senate told him to piss off, 95-0. Maybe a few Senators would be afraid of being called racists and would support Dumbo Ears but the rest would like to keep their jobs.

No, americans are too self-centered and reactive. It’s an intangible until it affects some one directly. The minute the paycheck is lower by 25%, the electricity bill has doubled, and individuals have to make choices between having the lights on and another expense, people will get angry. Unfortunately it has to take a real world consequence for many to see the folly of their actions.
