Conservatives thoughts on just being laid off. (I was)

I was laid off this week. Two weeks before Christmas. Am I scared, No, I have no debt and a savings account.

I have been in my trade for 15 years and have excellent skills.

I took and passed my states contractors license a few months ago and passed. Yea me!

I have about 3 years of living expenses in the bank and no debt.

I'm taking a well deserved few months off before the next year and will start my own business come spring. I'll be hunting and fishing in my spare time. Who needs the damn government! Not this family.

Good luck to you. You have a good attitude (helped no doubt by your advanced planning) and that counts for a lot.

Good for you! We all should be as prepared as you are in case it happens to us. I dare say most of us aren't--and many of us probably don't have the ability to prepare ourselves that well.

Enjoy your "vacation".

One door closes, another door opens. Taking a break is a great idea, you’ve earned it and this will give you time to find that next door.

I just saw where COBOL programmers can make up to $120 an hour. I can live on that if needed.

Go for it. Small business is the lifeblood of this country.

Mr. Piper.

With your phenomenal attitude, preparation, and (I'm sure) skills, you will be a long-term success story.

Good on you, sir!

Considering you said family, I’d check if you can keep your health insurance through the COBRA option. It will cost you but you’ll get a better group rate and you can keep it for 18 months.

I presume by no debt you also mean no mortgage. That’s good! If push comes to shove, you could take out a mortgage on your home.

While you’re relaxing, I would suggest you read up on additional certifications and attend community meetings where people who need your services will be in attendance. Build your network and you’ll be all set for the spring.

Well, good for you, and congratulations on your good fortune and skills.

I was laid off and out of work for about 5 months in 2001, but I had no debt and lived off my savings for that time. There were some upsides to it (made some good consulting contacts that later resulted in work), but it was not sustainable.

Today I'm not in quite so fortunate circumstances, but I have my current job, and hope to pull out of my current, umm, financial predicament within a few years. Haven't ever been in debt before, and it sucks.

Be thankful, you have much to be thankful for. Cheers, and good luck with your business!

Very sorry to hear that.

Why does things like this ALWAYS seem to happen just before Christmas??

Sounds like you are in great shape to rebound and land on your feet somewhere. What sucks, is given the sorry state of affairs right now, there will be less places to land.

The Tulsa oil company I worked for went bankrupt and laid of 280 of us August 12th. I got a job doing the same thing with a new company August 28th.
Lesson 1: never burn bridges. You never know who you're going to be working for.

Good for you, MrPiper, to be so well prepared for one of life’s rainy days!

Be careful to keep your expenses to the minimum, so you can live lean and mean. When you start working again, earn just enough to keep body and soul together, and to rebuild that rainy-day account.

No point in earning enough to keep Washington happy!

If we all started to earn just enough to keep food on the table, and the government wolf from the door, could we stop the insanity in D.C.?
