State Department officials have suspended a program that allows refugees in the U.S. to bring family members into the country after an investigation revealed widespread fraud in the system.
Since the 1980's, the State Department has granted refugee family members who are left behind in war-torn countries priority-3 access to the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program on a case-by-case basis.
After suspicions of fraud were raised last year – often involving unrelated children being claimed as family – the State Department conducted DNA testing of 3,000 applicants to the program, to see if they were actually related to the family members they claimed.
In more than 80 percent of the cases, the applicants either refused to take the tests or were discovered to have DNA that didn't match their reported family members.
"We were alarmed that the rate was so high," a State Department official – who spoke on condition of anonymity as a matter of departmental policy – told the Washington Post. "In fewer than 20 percent of cases did the applicant take the test and it checked out." Seyoum Berhe, an official of refugee services for the Catholic Archdiocese of Arlington, told the Post there are legitimate humanitarian reasons the DNA doesn't always match.
"A village is burning. People are running. Someone grabs a child and ends up raising him. The DNA may not be the same, but in every other way, he is the parent," said Berhe. "We certainly do not support fraud, but there is a human aspect, too. If my brother were killed in Somalia and I saved his child, according to our culture, that child is mine."

Any program that allows family members to be imported is subject to fraud. It is easy to get a false/real birth certificate from Mexico. Suddenly a sister becomes a daughter, or cousin becomes a daughter. Or older sister becomes a mother..
Totally predictable, and the a-holes who wrote the legislation knew it when they wrote it too. They just didn't give a sh*t.

Does anyone doubt that the program which allows legal immigrants to bring family members into the US would be equally fraught with fraud and cheating?
Our shameless politicians have turned our immigration and refugee programs into little more than schemes for buying future votes and party loyalty.

I don’t want people calling me an immigrant as is so trendy these days with the liberal’s “nation of immigrants” gig. I was born in this country as was my father, my grandfather, my great grandfather and his grandfather. I’m no immigrant. I’m a native of this country.
As far as I’ve been able to determine, my family living on this continent predate the American Revolution. If your people have been on the land longer than the nation, it’s kind of hard to think of yourself as an immigrant, that’s for sure....
Fraud in any of the visa issuance programs of the State Department is not a new phenomenon, despite the fact that the media has just “discovered” and decided that it’s now news. Why should the refugee program be any different, just because the media stumbles across it?
The State Department, like many of its counterparts of the government, has been rife with fraud for decades, especially in the areas of visas, where often US consulates insist on hiring foreign nationals of the host country to do its work. Visa stamps and blank US passports were forever “disappearing,” and workers regularly being found doing business for payoffs.
Typically, their response to evidence of fraud in these posts, even when it involved US employees of the Department, was to hush it up as soon as possible, and reassign the US employees.

Any nation that takes in Somalians is insane. They are of no benefit to America or Canada or what have you.
Anyone who falsely uses family reunification to bring in immigrants should have their own visas revoked. We’ve revoked the citizenship of naturalized former nazis who lied on their application to cover their true intentions. We should do the same for immigrants who don’t intend to adopt American values.
