Arena Football to cancel 2009 season-reports

CHICAGO, Dec 15 (Reuters) - The Arena Football League has canceled its 2009 season, but will resume play the following year, the Cleveland Plain Dealer and The New York Times reported on Monday.

League officials could not be reached to comment, but have previously denied the indoor football league would cancel the 2009 season. The AFL, founded in 1987, has 16 teams after New Orleans folded in October.

However, the owner of the Cleveland Gladiators told the Times that AFL executives and team owners moved to suspend the 2009 season, pending approval by the players' union, so the league could fix its economic model.

While I don't want to take away anyone's enjoyment or employment, this is excellent news for football fans and connoisseurs of classic cinema alike.

With this cheap charade version of "football" off the airwaves, it frees up one more channel for old movies.

If anyone misses Arena "football" that badly, they can come over to my house and watch my kids play it in the living room.

I watch arena football when there is nothing else decent on the tube.

Some kinda football is better than NO football in the off season.

That's like saying shooting baking soda will suffice when you're out of smack. You have no shame.

Pony up for the NFL network, they run games all year long, and really interesting shows about cheerleaders.

I will miss and so will the company I work for. We produced and printed most of the marketing materials for the Chicago Rush - media guides, game programs, player cards, etc. It is at least $130,000 worth of business that we are losing.

They (the Rush) are a very well-run organization. It’s too bad the other teams in the league didn’t follow their model.

Well then, you prove my point. Arena football is unnecessary and an abomination to the true game of football. Running around inside before the ball is snapped, bouncing passes off screens, three down line men, fellas who go both ways. It's all quite disgusting.

BTW- if you forget my FReeper Birthday this year, we're not FRiends anymore.

I have to say I missed it, regrettably. I heard nothing but phenomenal reviews for it. Perhaps it's available on that Comcast On Demand service. I'll make a note to check.

I posted an entire thread and pinged you to it. Just because the mods removed it as "Unspeakably Obscene" doesn't mean I didn't do something.

arena what?

Imagine real football being played by smaller, slower, less skilled players, in someone's living room with the coffee table taken out of the way, the couches turned around so you can bang into them, and bubble wrap covering the pictures and mirrors.

Then you have "arena" football. Chuck Bednarik and Jim Brown are spinning in their graves like Dremmel tools. If they were dead. Which they're not.
