ROYAL DUTCH SHELL has become the second big energy company to abandon the UK wind-energy sector in the last month.
Shell, Danish firm Dong Energy and Scottish Power have cancelled the £800m Cirrus Array project off the northwest coast after five years and millions of pounds in investment.
The consortium blamed Ministry of Defence concerns over radar interference from turbines.

Last month BP also moved its wind-energy focus to America, citing generous subsidies and a less-onerous planning process.

Wind power is the best thing since sliced bread !!! (As long as the subsidies last.....)
Wait until the lawyers queue up over here about the low pitch humming and the whoosh whoosh of the blades that keeps the neighbors 200 miles away up at night ...
“generous subsidies.”
Now that’s just great.
Shell executives live high off the hog, make millions of dollars per year, yet they depend on MY tax money to subsidize them.
Why even work? What a scam.
Thanks Bush.
Where I live it's windy almost constantly and I'm planning on a deal with a wind farm operator to allow a bunch of these things on my land. Once they have them on my land I can pretty much retire on the income from them so if you want to send some more my way I'll be happy to take them!
T. Boone don’t like competition.
Yep, it sure does. Big wind farms have been pretty much debunked as any real solution to energy production haven’t they? These companies should cut their losses, if my understanding is correct. I do believe wind might be a resource for single family dwellings in some instances. I’m not in favor of big wind farms any longer, and I say that as a person who thought they might be pretty good, at one time.

NO but I will take a piece of the maintenance contract on that overpriced taxpayer subsidized money eater.
The solution, of course, is to not subsidize them, rather than criticize them for their attempt to be politically correct. Without government subsidies, NOBODY is going to build wind farms to compete against $40 per barrel oil. NOBODY.
Whoosh whoosh 200 miles away? The birds that are killed will be thrown to the Moon and beyond. Can you hear or see a jet at 35,000 FEET? Not unless you’re on that jet going nowhere.
I only have 2 acres, wonder if I can get one :)
Actually we have a farm of them a couple miles away from here. Other then me thinking of the money I spent on them they look pretty cool, when the wind is blowing of course.

They dig the Pickens plan!
Personally, I'm hoping to land most of that gig since (a) I'll have no commute going to work and (b) I like to tinker with machinery anyways.
Yes.
You probably can. Go inquire at the local windfarm and ask. The windmills are pretty quiet and the income is kinda nice. We have a cell tower well away from the house (that they even camoflauged as an old style windmill) and we get $1,200 per month on it.
Heck yes! Nearly any hare-brained scheme can be made to look brilliant when someone else is paying the bills.
That is some sweet site rent! For a single tower, I'm amazed.
