Fourteen years ago, I was surprised when the announcement for an arriving train at the Amtrak station in Santa Ana was delivered in Spanish before the English announcement was given.

I was further surprised when the English announcement was never given.

Genghis Khan conquered China, but two generations later Kublai Khan was (I have been told) essentially “Chinese”. If a critical mass of those residing in the Southwest does not possess an American (United States) identity, does that hypothetical “fact” (being conjecture in this case) trump the official political reality.

Just a thought. The history of the world is full of migrations of people, and ever-shifting boundaries. I’ll spend some time studying what happens “on the ground” when boundaries change...what it looks like to the guy in the street.
