We're now entering the final phase of an outgoing administration. And during this phase, George W. Bush, mere mortal but still president, has the practically supernatural ability to grant pardons. This endows him with the power of life over death, of clemency over conviction. For one month more, President Bush will be able to right wrongs, show mercy and restore faith. For one month more, he will have the opportunity to pardon Sgt. Evan Vela, now serving 10 years in a military prison for what a court martial called "murder" but what I, along with many, many Americans, call war.

He also needs to pardon those border patrol agents that shot that drug runner in the butt, and who are now serving time for doing their job.
He should have put a stop to that before it ever went that far.
As far as we are concerned, Evan was doing the very same thing, his job.
Good article by Diana West. Has President Bush received the pardon requests from the Senator and Representative yet?
I am unsure if they sent letters directly to the President, as well as letters to my bro.
Freepmail.
“He also needs to pardon those border patrol agents...”
Bush already said he won’t pardon them. They will remaim locked up. What a shame.
That makes me so mad at Bush. I really thought he was a CHRISTIAN MAN, but apparently not, he has proved that several times. I really had high hopes for Bush but come to find out he’s just another politician just like the rest of those crooks up there. And true, how sad is this. Our country is headed for severe problems.
Poor guy. Jailed for following order to kill a jerk who was about to alert the enemy. The Iraqi government wanted a pound of flesh huh? Screw them.
This type of thing would normally only piss me right the F*** off, except in this case this kid is my nephew. So now you know how I really feel.
“Screw them” puts it mildly.
I am very sorry the US Military decided to screw over your nephew. It’s really appalling and shameful. Bush better do something right here.
All to placate our enemies.

The higher command sent these kids out to accomplish a specific mission. They did that. To hand them over for doing exactly what they were supposed to is so sickening I can’t begin to tell you.
The higher command were the ones throwing the rocks. These kids were merely the rocks. For the higher ups to hide their hands and say it “Who me? is so chickensh*t.
I symbolically pi$$ on them all. And if I ever get the chance, not so symbolically.
Now is not fast enough.
No their doing time about lying about their job.

Might I just say, you are a generous soul.
Thanks
You mean Josh Groban? Or really Brolin?? lol
So they got shot in the butt...big deal. He was a illegal, drug running, thug invading our country. Do you realize that that illegal won a deal from the government for big bucks and was deported, then was arrested just a few months later for doing the same thing. I do not care if the agents lie, To all Border Patrol Agents......SHOOT TO KILL
My puter kicked the link off both times that I tried to view it....I did see EV’s photo and poof it was gone.
I will take Girlene’s post as word.
I’ll email it to you. It’s actually a good read.
Well aren’t you just a peach!! Thanks. AND welcome to Free Republic....
Pardon Ping.
Merry Christmas, fred-
Thanks M.U. And I apologize for not pinging you to this earlier.
No apology needed Fred. A safe and content Christmas to you and yours.
I am informed this morning that a letter has been received back from the White House that this matter is under “serious” consideration. They also suggested that another avenue is the Clemency, which has been submitted and is awaiting final review. Which is now a week overdue.
While it wasn’t a definite No, my source says they will try and contact the letter sender and tell them the Clemency has been addressed.
Still hoping, Still praying, for a favorable outcome.
In the meantime, the Appeal process Slowly drags on.
Correct me if I am wrong. They don’t want to “poo poo” the pardon, so they pacify by saying “serious consideration” but in the same breath said..”hey there’s another lemonade stand over there” called Clemency?
Labels not needed, just do it President GWB.
Right-O. Exactly what I said.
My first thought was that this was an out. Instead of saying no they just give another option. How nice of them...
Gotta keep hoping though.
Thanks for the update, Fred. Praying it’s not just double speak.
Prayers up that the President takes it from “serious consideration” to making it a done deal for Sgt Vela, bhfred.
Let us all prayerfully hope in the near future your joy shall be increased as you hear about your nephew being fully pardoned from any wrong doing and set free.
Prayers are up and fingers crossed, fred.
No one deserves a “pardon” more that Evan! I hesitate to even use the word “pardon” because the whole trial was a joke. This is a young, honorable, military man who was following orders and in a hostile situation, and protecting others.
What the heck makes the President hesitate? Who could possibly object to a “pardon” like this, a young family man with no history of any trouble? Of all the sleazebag disgusting deadbeats and thugs pardoned by Clinton, what is the controversy of granting a “pardon” that would be a joy to everyone with a sense of decency or patriotism?
We’ve all sighed with relief as each of the Haditha Marines had charges dropped or were acquitted, but then justice was served. Here with Evan is a clear situation of a gross injustice that the President could make right with the stroke of a pen. If he is a man of conscience, and has at all been informed of the details, he must grant Evan that pardon. May God will it.
To us it’s a no-brainer. Therein lies the problem. Thanks B.
