I thought I recalled how Joe Kennedy was some sort of NAZI sympathizer when he was ambassador to GB in the ‘30’s. Not sure, but would fit in with his apparent desire to control what he saw as the unfit.
Joe ended up on the American side during WWII. His eldest son Joseph Jr. was killed in the war. His second son John was seriously injured in the war. His third son Robert served in the Navy on a ship named Joseph P. Kenedy. His fourth son Theodore served in the Army during the Korean war, but was stationed in Paris.
Except for luck, lack of luck, happenstance and political positioning, the Kennedy family would have migrated to the Republican party along with other leading, wealthy Catholic families.
Most Democrats these days imagine that the Kennedy family were somehow "antiwar" ~ any disinterested observer would note that they were clearly a warrior family ready for a fight and very much pro-American.
Teddy's brain cancer has undoubtedly hindred him in recent decades and as a consequence he hasn't had a new thought since he was expelled from from Harvard the second time (the thought being to avoid the old man and join the Army ~ he screwed up by signing up for 4 years, but his dad pulled strings and got that shortened to 2. By the time he got out ol'Joe was no longer angry with him, or was otherwise distracted, so Teddy did not get lobotomized.)
