"If Bush went on a podium after 9/11 and said “we need to close the nations borders immediately.” The borders would be closed, it would be a fight, but a winnable one in the post 9/11 world. If he said “we can no longer rely on the state to feed and cloth us, we must sacrifice and rely on ourselves”, he could at least try to roll back the Great Society.
You can’t win if you don’t try.
