Companies That Won’t Make It Through 2009 (A wish for the New Year, NYT is #6)
24/7 Wall St. ^ | December 19, 2008 | Douglas A. McIntyre

Posted on 12/23/2008 9:01:53 AM PST by theymakemesick

A lot of fairly well-known public companies either disappeared or went bankrupt this year. Circuit City is on the list. Based on the most recent news GM may get added soon.

24/7 Wall St. looked at some of the largest and most well-known companies, reviewed their SEC filings if they are public, analyst reports, and media observations about their businesses and picked ten that probably won’t be around at the end of next year. That does not mean that their brands will disappear, but these companies will have been dissolved as the world knows them now or working though the court system in the hopes of getting Chapter 11 protection and a chance at survival.

I notice the U.S.Government isn't on the list.

That's because they were never in business to begin with. Just to be sure, I called my local Chamber of Commerce: "No business calling itself "The US Government has ever registered with us or operated here." I called a few more CoCs. Same story. So, I called the DC CoC: "I am sorry, but the US Government is not a business, it's a . . . . an . . . I . . . I don't know what it is, really, but it is NOT a business."

They may not be in business but they sure are in my wallet.

They suckered all the people.

Not me. Canceled cable in 1990. Quit watching broadcast, oh, several years ago.

My husband was at the mall this morning doing some last-minute shopping for our daughter. He saw that KB Toys is having a going out of business sale.

I'm happy to see Hovnanian on that list. The Hovnanian family has been a slimy fixture in New Jersey for years, and I don't know anyone who has purchased a Hovnanian home and has actually been happy with it.

Folks in New Jersey might remember the bizarre saga of the Lady Anna -- a luxury fishing boat owned by one of the Hovnanian brothers that was "stolen" from the manufacturer in 1991 (the ship builder claimed that it was removed from his boatyard at night, without his permission, while the buyer still owed several hundred thousand dollars on it). The boat sank under mysterious circumstances a year later off the coast of New Jersey (the insurance company refused to pay the claim because they apparently had evidence that the boat had been deliberately scuttled), with all of the crew members rescued without a drop of water on them even though it allegedly sank "in minutes."

We too dumped it.

I'll be damned if I'm going to pay these con men to watch their commercials.

No way.

Who would have ever believed that they'd get people to pay to watch their commercials after the commercials are already paid for? It's an unbelievable criminal scheme that actually worked.

If Circuit City goes under, I won’t have a convenient place to go to sample my electronics before buying them for cheaper elsewhere on the internet.

Maybe someone needs to open a small shop with sample electronics to play with for a small fee. They could also make money with person-to-person tutorials and selling small items like discount cables and media.

(2) Sirius XM (SIRI) has traded under $.10 down from a 52-week high of $3.89. Reuters has reported that "Sirius XM faces some $1.1 billion in debt in 2009. Of that, about $300 million comes due in February."

Yikes, we've been counting on Satellite radio to broadcast talk radio should the diabolical Fairness Doctrine be enacted.

Oh my! I remember when people were quitting their jobs to go work for Nortel because they paid so well and didnt expect you to do squat.

Remarkable that they should go out of business then.

Alas! Poor America I knew her well.

Sadly, I think we only knew her in an idealized way, the way our Founding Fathers envisioned and constructed her. There has been a growing socialist and fascist undercurrent for close to one hundred years. They've infiltrated every facet of society and have learned how to candy-coat their destructive and immoral messages so the now dumbed-down sheep buy it, lock, stock and barrel. I hope I'm wrong but I fear that we're the minority.

Then when the scheme is forced on everyone, the GD thing is nothing but commercials, and they got all the suckers to pay to watch *their* own commercials.

Not to mention the services padding their number of channels with 1/3 shopping channels, and infomercials taking up 1/3 of the regular channels' daily airtime.

Satellite radio makes sense as an open service, where other companies pay to put data on their system so that their products receive regular updates, or several streams of data, but it doesn't work as a simple radio service.

Seriously. I talked to loads of guys who said “you should hire in here, I got a 10% increase in pay and I dont have to do jack”

I thought to myself “the money sounds good but how does ‘I dont do jack’ look on the resume”?

Alberta,

I have a KHov home. Don’t have any complaints about it that differ from the previous builders I have used. In fact, they were the first to actually get it done when they said they would!

Tell everyone how great "Pay/cable TV" is, tell them cable has more channels, NO commercials etc. Then when the scheme is forced on everyone, the GD thing is nothing but commercials, and they got all the suckers to pay to watch *their* own commercials. Force them to not only watch commercials, but get these suckers pay to watch them! This is one of the biggest frauds ever.

I agree I only wish the public would all cancel until they bring it back like it was originally

People love to put out, and people love to fret over lists of "who will be out of business by the end of the year" type stories. At the end of the day, this happens every year. And we weren't phased by it in the past, so why should we be today?

Take a look at the Forbes 100 from 75 years ago. 50 years ago. 20 years ago. Even 10 years ago.

See how many companies are on there that you had never heard of. Or how many are on the list today that weren't then. Or that were on the list then, but don't exist any longer.

Its the way the market works. Creative destruction. And it is neccessary for innovation, advancement, and economic growth.

I have had XM radio for 5 years and love it. I hope someone picks them up. It would be tough to go back to the crap you get on local radio. I can only take so much of the ranting of Rush and others before I need a break. And local music stations are all either Rap, R&B or the crap they call Country today. XM/Sirius at least gives you a choice. DirecTV would be the logical choice since they carry it already on their music stations.

I would rather see an activist anti-American company that deals in the business of ideas fail before a company that actually recognizes the gift of being American. I’m not “fretting” or “phased” by the NYT dying, I’m hoping it does and will not apologize for that wish.

Aside from radio, you could also listen to CDs in your car, or get an iPod and listen to that.

My car radio is rarely used to actually listen to the radio outside of sporting events. It is almost always used in conjunction with my iPod.
