Gov. Paterson yesterday tamped down suggestions that Caroline Kennedy is at the top of the list to replace Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, asking, "How is she a front-runner?"
The comment came as Paterson was arriving back from a trip to Iraq to visit the troops with Reps. Anthony Weiner and Steve Israel at La Guardia Airport. The governor was hit with a crush of questions about the Camelot scion's push to replace Clinton, who will be nominated to become secretary of state.
He bristled when a reporter described Kennedy - who has never been elected to office and whose qualifications have been criticized - as the "front-runner."
"How is she a front-runner?" the Democratic governor, who has sole power to choose Clinton's successor, interrupted tartly.
The remark came as some Paterson advisers have questioned the rollout of Kennedy's candidacy over the past week, even as Mayor Bloomberg - who several sources say is boosting her behind the scenes - publicly urged the governor to speed up his selection process.
Paterson said he was amused by news accounts during his Iraq trip that quoted various "sources" and "friends."
"This whole thing sounds more like the prelude to a high school musical than the choosing of a senator."

Here's her Aunt Eunice trying for the Nancy Pelosi look:
My favorite Eunive:
From "Mama's Family".
****Hey, her name is Kennedy, show a little respect to your betters, gov.*****
Her name is Caroline Schlossberg ....her stage name is Caroline Kennedy...courtesy of the MSM tabloids.
Ironic when we remember the revolutionary war was to rid this nation of a monarchy. If we are going “retro” I for one would love to see Prince William in the White House.
Interviewed Eunice at the opening of a Planet Hollywood.
Her face looked like the tread on a snow tire.
Second only to Helen Thomas in Ugly.
Her married name may change to Sulzberger?
“Her face looked like the tread on a snow tire.”
Her face looked like it was full of ‘character.’
“This whole thing sounds more like the prelude to a high school musical ...”
If only it were that thoughtful and substantive.
I still think it would be politically stupid to appoint Caroline. The idiot freaks who love her are going to vote for the Rats no matter what. Paterson needs to appoint someone who appeals more to the moderates. They need the moderate vote to win elections. Well, at least for a couple more years until the Dalai Obama institutes the new voting rules. Then it won’t matter. Ever again.
These Kennedy women look as if they never ate a piece of cheese in their life...you know too much fat. They look like they all suffer fron osteoporosis!
If you look at her uncle Ted his complexion is exactly like hers. So she got the Kennedy genes and quite obviously she got some of the bad ones.
Too bad she didn’t get her mothers genes who always was a hottie unlike her daughter.
The local radio station (Buffalo, NY) had a poll last week. 80% of the people did not want the Kennedy princess as their senator.
I was in a few high school musicals and believe me, the two things are completely different. Participation in the musicals required work, practice, dedication and at least a little bit of talent. The senate on the other hand...
Unfortunately, Buffalo doesn’t count as part of New York for political purposes. All areas outside of NYC are inconsequential to the politicians.
Maybe if she LOOKED like the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL chick I'd say Why Not!
I rather see Fran Drescher appointed as the Senator.
She has actually accomplished some things in her life. The hard way.
Besides, can you imagine watching her honk on C-Span?
