AUSTIN — A South Texas rancher got a good-news phone call Tuesday about a presidential pardon that wipes away a felony conviction for hiring undocumented workers to harvest his watermelons 16 years ago.

"I really don't know why or anything," said John Allen Aregood, of Riviera, a ranching town about 11 miles south of Kingsville. "It's just a good Christmas present."

He was one of 19 people granted pardons Tuesday by President George W. Bush.

The only Texan on the list, Aregood paid a modest fine and served two years of probation after his conviction for aiding and harboring unauthorized immigrants.

Aregood, 64, is no longer is in the watermelon business and said he has never met Bush.

>>That’s an interesting possibility. If true, I’m still having difficulty imagining what Compean was thinking to accomplish.<<

Maybe to “scare him off” or out of frustration.

>>(And if Compean thought he was in danger, as he argued at trial, then why was he shooting to miss?)<<

It would not make sense for Compean to shoot to miss in that case, and if I remember correctly, at least one of Compean or Ramos testified that he was shooting to kill. Compean’s story was that he thought he was in danger, and honestly I don’t know whether he believed that or not.

I don’t think Compean was really that bad of a shot. Another possibility was that he was shooting in the general direction of where he thought OAD might be, but if so he probably would not admit that in court, since that would be dangerous to others, including other BP agents, and that probably would not sound good to the jury.

Yes, I’ve seen that excerpt of the 2000 Bush campaign speech before. Had I seen it prior to the election, I would have been a little more reluctant to cast my vote for him.

The thing that has angered me the most about George Bush, is his refusal to be honest about what is apparently a hidden agenda, or geopolitical consideration on his part. There can be no mistake that he considers Mexico and America to be something akin to a unified political body - hence his resistance to every anti-illegal immigration measure.

This puts Bush smack in the global elitist camp, and makes sense of many of his curious and dumbfounding positions.

Please.

Bush has been very straightforward with his plans in each election. I don’t like some of the stuff he did/tried to do, but to say he mislead is just ridiculous.

Yeah...he was very straightforward about his intention to buck the will of 80% of the people over illegal immigration before both elections. Yep. He told us all, and we voted him in anyway.

Everybody but you is a ‘blithering idiot’.

Actually another phrase comes to mind.

See my comment #11. QED

Although in your case, seeing that you are a late arrival, I'll summarize: "1rudeboy is making fun of the argument--waah."

The final dog turd thrown by Bush at the Republican base that he holds in such contempt. Just a bunch of suckers who fell for his act, as far as he's concerned.

He did this on purpose knowing full well about the campaigns to pardon Ramos and Compean. This is his reply.

The Bush family continues on. The hispanic heir George P. must not be impeded by an image of The Family being "anti hispanic" when his run comes up in 2020 or so.

Thus the current monarch does his duty to further The Family's interests at the expense of American interests.

So ends one of the more despicable chapters in American history, where a man and his little gang around him pretended to be the leaders of a movement but were in fact the sworn enemies of that movement.
