Fascinating article, indeed for an atheist like me, art is the closest thing to a religious experience. The fact that art exists is to me the strongest argument for the existence of God.

Beautiful art still exists, at least in cinema. The Kubricks, Kurosawas, Bergmans, and Tarkovskys of the world will continue to carry the fire.

Fantastic taste. I absolutely agree with your post. I chuckled to as you are an atheist, I am a deeply dedicated Christian and we both feel exactly the same about art, as well as share similar tastes in film. :)

You're the first person that I've seen mention Tarkovsky on FR. His "Sacrifice" is a masterpiece. Tarkovsky was born with eyes. (nostalghia.com) Art, as I just happened to read from Mark Helprin (Ellis Island), is there "for want of connection." And art, says Richard Weaver, keeps us from being assimilated with matter. Whenever the ghost of alienation is particularly sharp and pungent, the artist always helps to lift the fog.
