It is also important to stress that it wasn't originally an islamist revolution. The first and foremost revolutionaries were leftist liberals, communists and islamo-marxists supported openly by leftist liberals in the West.
The most radical group, the Khomeinist islamists at the beginning weren't dominant, but began succesfully to take over the revolution and in 1980 were fully in charge, when they began turning on their former allies on the left. The leftists were the useful idiots of the radical islamists... just like the American left today is.
