Week of babies and lies

Sarah Palin talks about her daughter's baby, and a hoax that fooled Oprah Winfrey falls apart.

Buzz Week in Review

A collective exhale ushered the volatile 2008 out the door this week, although one baby who caused a political storm managed to quietly slip himself out before the end. Meanwhile, a long-time Oprah hoax and high-seas piracy stirred up the Buzz—and the searches—during this transition period.

Mom, Do We Have to Do a Combo Celebration? Bristol Palin's boy emerged not as the grandson of the first female vice president, but as another December baby who will have to insist that his birthday celebrations remain separate from Christmas. Searches soared for the aptly named Baby Tripp, as well as for his momma (+851%) and all his youthful uncles and aunts. Meanwhile, proud grandma Sarah Palin—already busy defending her future son-in-law Levi Johnston's degree aspirations—used the happy event to warn against teen pregnancy on the governor's website. The message include Bristol calling her newborn "perfectly precious," although the timing itself hadn't been "ideal."

Oprah, Who Can You Believe? The dominoes finally fell this week after Herman Rosenblat, who had been telling a sweet little story about meeting his wife at the fence of Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany for a dozen years, recanted his story. After a New Republic article raised many questions, publisher Berkley Books (already fooled twice by other authors) canceled his forthcoming memoir, and another publisher offered refunds for "Angel Girl," a children's book inspired by Rosenblat's tale. His hoax had charmed Oprah (twice), who declared his story the "single greatest love story...we've ever told on the air." Hollywood, which always changes the truth anyway, is going ahead with a film project based on the well-meant but discredited tale.

Yahoo’s current front page has photos of Sarah Palin and Oprah Winfrey side-by-side with the headline “Week of Babies and Lies”

The clear intent is to make it seem that Sarah Palin is somehow wrapped up in “lies” and maybe that she has to go on Oprah to talk about it.

NO, when you click to the actual article it turns out that one item is about Bristol Palin’s baby, and a totally separate item is about the holocaust-related hoax love story that Oprah fell for.

Sarah Palin has NOTHING to do with the “lies” alluded to in the headline, but you’d never know it from the way Yahoo presents it on their main page, seen by 80 million Americans per day.

Can someone save a screenshot and post it here on FR?

It will go away b/c Yahoo changes these pages often, at least daily and sometimes more often when there’s breaking news etc.

Outrageous, blatant smear of Sarah Palin with a headline that actually has nothing to do with her.

This was not “accidental” — this was some libscum editor(s) at Yahoo.com deciding that this was a cute way to smear Governor Palin.

Something for your collection — I couldn’t believe it when I saw Governor Palin’s photo under this headline..... I do NOT believe this juxtaposition was accidental. There are lots of other ways they could have framed their “buzz” story about various recent celebrity events.

Ah, they’ve changed the page — maybe someone pointed out to them how it made them look.

Too bad, I should have figured out how to take a screenshot and post it here!!

That's exactly what I thought when I saw the headline on Yahoo yesterday. Most people will only read the headline and think that it's Sarah Palin that's lying. Totally disgusting and totally planned by the left-wing media whores.

It’s not even an original dirty trick — didn’t US Weekly do the same thing on its cover?

Thanks, it's already there on the thread you linked, that's the Yahoo screenshot I'm talking about!!

So that thread was posted around 8 am and mine was posted after 3 pm, so that Yahoo homepage with Sarah Palin, Oprah, and the headline "Week of babies and lies" was up for at least 7+ hours before they changed it.
