President George W Bush, in his last fortnight in office, is providing Israel with the diplomatic support the country needs to continue its offensive in the Gaza Strip.
Late on Saturday, America prevented the United Nations Security Council from passing a statement urging an immediate ceasefire on both sides and expressing deep concern at the escalation of violence between Israel and Hamas.
Britain has moved away from America and joined the consensus of European governments, who favour a ceasefire. Deprived of Britain's support, America was isolated on the 15-member Council.
Alejandro Wolff, the deputy US Ambassador at the UN, said after the fruitless four-hour meeting that Washington believed it was important to stop the region from returning to the "status quo" where Hamas fighters were able to fire rockets at Israel virtually every day. "The efforts we are making internationally are designed to establish a sustainable, durable ceasefire that's respected by all," said Mr Wolff. "And that means no more rocket attacks. It means no more smuggling of arms."
In his weekly radio address, Mr Bush had gone even further, squarely blaming Hamas for provocation and calling the use of rockets an "act of terror".
"Another one-way cease-fire that leads to rocket attacks on Israel is not acceptable," said the President in the Saturday address. "And promises from Hamas will not suffice."
Condoleezza Rice, the secretary of state, has pointedly failed to travel to the Middle East since the onset of the crisis. While President Nicolas Sarkozy of France is due in Israel today to press the demand for a ceasefire, Miss Rice has no plans to make the same request in person.
Stefan Halper, a White House aide in the Reagan and Bush Senior administrations, said there was no chance of Washington relaxing its traditional support for Israel.

President Bush isn’t going to change his foreign policy stance...and I am very proud of him.
How perceptive of Flash Gordon. You are damned right it is an escalation. Imagine Briton being subjected to daily rocket attacks from their neighbor and America condemning them for daring to defend themselves.
Bush gets it right from time to time.
That is almost too funny (WWII).
Fixed it!
Note to Ehud Barak: Enjoy the support while you can...
Shows how weak the Bambi is ..............we are still looking to President Bush for leadership.
Wanna know why 0bama is silent on this issue?
His Harvard education was sponsored and paid for by Arab Muslims and he counts not one, but two, PLO spokesmen as close friends, the now dead, Edward Said, and Rashid Khalidi.

High Volume. Articles on Israel can also be found by clicking on the Topic or Keyword Israel. or WOT [War on Terror]
Obama is irrelevant in this. George W. Bush is STILL President.
I'm almost certain that the timing of this Israeli ground action was decided on with the upcoming change in US administrations in mind. Israel is acknowledging the differences between the two by taking this action when she did.
