Reid Appears to Give Burris an Opening
Wall Street Journal ^ | JAN 5 2009 | DOUGLAS BELKIN

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the chamber has the authority to block the appointment of Roland Burris but left open the possibility that he could still be seated.

"There is clearly legal authority for us to do whatever we want to do," Mr. Reid said in an interview aired on NBC News's "Meet the Press" Sunday. But he later added: "There's always room to negotiate."

Because of the federal corruption charges hanging over Democratic Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, Mr. Reid said any appointment Mr. Blagojevich makes is "tainted."

Mr. Blagojevich announced the appointment of Mr. Burris, 71 years old, on Dec. 30, three weeks after he was charged with scheming to auction off the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama. Mr. Blagojevich has denied wrongdoing. The week after those charges were leveled, Democrats in the Illinois Legislature quashed efforts to strip Mr. Blagojevich of his power to appoint the next senator or to call for a special election to fill the seat. That left the door open for Mr. Burris's appointment and created a debate over whether the Senate has the power to block it.

Mr. Reid said he will meet with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) Monday and hopes to "solve this on a bipartisan basis."

As much as I don't like this , Harry continues to be full of BS !

I think he has to seat the POS or he wouldn't be negotiating aka selling the senate seat from inside the chamber.

Doom on Pandering Polidiots and Presstitutes !!!

Hey, it’s Chaos in the Democrat party, what’s not to like?

Dingy Harry is doubtless being told what to think and say. He may also start worrying about his own skin if he’s on Fitz’s tapes.

Rat on Rat fighting is always good sport!

Noooooooooooooo. No bipartisan basis. This is entirely a Democratic fiasco so please let the Republicans stay quiet.

Unless it involves seating Coleman too . . .

Reid is a slimey little slug. Wonder what he offered Burris to shut up and frog march.

I also figure Reid was never going to block his nomination.

Imagine Blago as a Republican.

Imagine a GOP President-elect with a COS implicated even tangentially to the Blago story and a member of your cabinet to be resigning in the face of a federal investigation involving fraud.

Now think for just a minute how differently this entire story would read in the MSM?

It boggles the mind!

“Harry is soliciting a bribe.

Why not? If Obama’s bringing The Chicago Way to DC, Harry Reid figures he may as well get in on the action...
