A civil rights group is protesting a well-known actor's actions, which many believe are hurting low-income families.

Actor Robert Redford is among a group of environmentalists that has been fighting to stop the sale of leases to oil and gas companies on land in Utah. Environmentalists claim the 110,000 acres should be conserved because of a high concentration of prehistoric archaeological sites and rock art.

But members of the Congress of Racial Equality, including national chairman Niger Innis, contend Redford and his environmentalist friends are actually hurting the poor.

You betcha. Since the first crack down of the Northwest Forest Plan, communities in my neck of the world have been declining rapidly into abject poverty. There is high unemployment, substance abuse, domestic violence and child abuse. The economy is so bad that the entire county has been designated an Enterprise Zone to encourage any development.

The tribes and enviros have systematically largely dismantled the timber industry, have been working on killing the gold mining industry for the past several years, and have agriculture in a death spiral vice of salmon, clean water and clean air regulations.

Not to mention that they want to rip our four dams in the county and release tens of thousands of yards of dioxin laced sediment downstream. They have shot down a CalPine geothermal development, halted a water bottling plant and are now working on shutting down a new biomass electrical plant.

Social and environmental justice are just hollow words to environmentalists. They only drag them out for urban members (use of tribes) when they want to shut something down.

...in fact, raising energy costs [for all Americans], but in particular, the impact that those high energy costs have on those least able to handle it," he points out. Low-income families in Chicago and across the Midwest would be hurt the hardest, according to Innis.

Not to mention all the jobs in Utah just eliminated completely. How is rock art going to be hurt anyway? Rock art is found on cliffs and in caves. No one drills for oil or gas into a cliff. Bogus environmentalism.
