New Details Emerge About Gov's Mystery Announcement (Gov is MIA)

SEATTLE -- Gov. Chris Gregoire has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday morning that's shrouded in secrecy, but KIRO 7 Eyewitness News has learned that she will not announce that she's joining the Obama Administration.

The governor's office said Monday that Gregoire is out of state. She canceled an Olympia speaking engagement set for Tuesday, and she will make an announcement Tuesday at 10 a.m. via satellite to local reporters.

A number of bloggers speculated the governor would be named as president-elect Obama's Commerce Secretary after New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson withdrew from the running. An Obama spokesman, Robert Gibbs, denied that.

Representatives of the governor's office have said she would not be taking any position with the new administration.

The governor was on a flight from Sea-Tac to Ronald Reagan National Airport on Sunday, a spokesman for Whatcom County told the Bellingham Herald.

Joe Bates, who is in Maryland for training paid by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, told the Herald he was on the same flight and sat several seats away from the governor.

I can imagine Gregoire begging Zero to make her Secretary of Commerce. This would take the heat off her for the work she needs to do to bring Washington State out of economic disaster. It was because of her lack of leadership that put Washington State in a $4.6 billion budget deficit.

Gregoire is under the gun to perform in Washington State. By vacating her office as Governor, and running to Washington DC to get a cabinet position, takes the huge mess off her back.
