You are forming an opinion based on a couple of lines in an article that reveals none of the facts of the case.

Holding his trial in Baghdad, inflenced by High Iraqi government officials, with a jury hand-picked by the prosecution, with evidence buried under secret classifications, Vela was the sacrifice to help bring about part of the Sunni awakening of a tribe of people described by one of his commanding officers as “all Al Queada”.

He did the job he was sent there to do.

Sgt. Evan Vela was not convicted of planting a weapon on the dead Iraqi. The AP did not have their facts straight. Information on Sgt. Vela's case can be found here, ARMY SNIPERS ACCUSED OF MURDER
