Swedish jobs moving abroad (A lesson for US Unions?)

The export of Swedish jobs is accelerating, according to a new report from Sweden's largest private sector trade union, Unionen. Many firms do not conduct any form of evaluation, the report shows.

Redundancies rocket in December (22 Dec 08)
Swedish job losses set to soar in 2009 (19 Dec 08)

Every third firm has moved jobs out of the country in the last three years and 37 percent of industrial firms have moved operations.

The report shows a significant increase on a previous survey, undertaken by Sif four years ago, which indicated that every fourth firm had moved operations overseas.

The report shows that at least a third of the firms moving jobs out of Sweden have not conducted any form of evaluation.

"It is a serious problem that so many decisions to move operations are not evaluated. Badly grounded decisions threaten the companies and, by extension, the jobs of Unionen's members," said Åsa Johansson, an economist at Unionen.

Johansson argued that while exporting jobs can seem on the surface to be a quick and simple solution to a company's problems it can in fact lead to disorganization and negative consequences for the staff that remain.

"Companies should take their responsibility by working with preventive measures such as investing in operations and developing the skills of their staff. It is important to analyze the effects of a move and the available alternatives," she said.

According to the survey, the main reason behind the export of jobs is to cut labour costs by moving to lower cost countries.

Manufacturing, staff administration, IT support and finance are the most common types of operations that are moved.

...the main reason behind the export of jobs is to cut labour costs by moving to lower cost countries. Sounds familiar!

I wonder if the federal government, now controlled by the Democratic Party and most elected Democrates owning favors to unions will understand that the federal government needs to help make the US economy competitive in a world market. And that means reducing many of the environmental, labor laws and other regulations that impede business.

Rather than looking at changing existing regulations, I am sure our federal government is going to focus on making union certification election votes public information so union thugs can terrorize those that don't want to become part of a union.

It is going to be a long, long recession.

If all other costs went to zero and regs went away as well, business would still move jobs to cut labor costs. This will continue until everyone lives 3rd world.

This has been going on since the 60s. I’m surprised any jobs are left in Sweden. And the Swedish tax authorities aren’t shy about going after people who legally moved out of Sweden years after they changed their citizenship to another country. The Swedish state needs revenue so they go after anyone who has any connection with Sweden. It is an example of where you end up when you have a cradle-to-grave, super-generous welfare state. No one works yet everyone wants full benefits and wants “the rich” to pay for it, even if “the rich” have long since left. Its where we are heading in the US.

I read recently that several Democrat representatives have told Pelosi they will not back the *card check* legislation.

Today I saw an article about a protest vote to put Dingell forward against Pelosi for Speaker.

Interesting times ahead. She doesn’t have the control she wants everyone to believe she does.

I think the way card check passes will be:

1) In a deal with Pubbies and some Dims in exchange for a cap gains tax deal or other conservative goal...or

2) Attached to some big, emergency bill at the last minute, maybe on a voice vote...or

3) Passed in some form where the MSM can claim that the Dims & Unions “gave in” on some key points...but they really didn’t.
