Obama breaks silence on Gaza, voices 'deep concern' over civilian deaths

Barack Obama, who takes over as U.S. president from George W. Bush on January 20, broke his silence about the violence in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, calling the loss of civilian lives in Gaza and in Israel a "source of deep concern for me."

Obama added he would adhere to his principle that only Bush should be the voice of U.S. foreign policy at this time but he would have plenty to say after his inauguration in two weeks.

Nonetheless, Obama said that he is "not backing at all from what I've said during the campaign we're going to engage effectively and consistently in the peace process."

"We've got plenty to say about Gaza, and on January 20, you'll hear directly from me," he added.

Meanwhile, the United States on Tuesday signaled some flexibility over Israel's offensive on the Gaza Strip, saying it would like to see "an immediate ceasefire" but emphasizing any such agreement must be durable, sustainable and indefinite.

U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack also said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's trip to the United Nations on Tuesday was designed to show that the United States was open a variety of ways to achieve a cease-fire. "We would like an immediate cease-fire, absolutely," McCormack told reporters, speaking after Israeli tank shells killed at least 40 Palestinians at a United Nations school where civilians had taken shelter. "An immediate cease-fire that is durable, sustainable and not time-limited."

I look forward to Obama's next statement on Gaza:

"I, uh, erm, I, uh, you know, I want, ur, it is my hope, uh, that this, a situation, fixes itself in, uh, the next two weeks, or better yet, um, twelve days, er, so that I don't have to um, er, say anything more a-about this, as I've said before, we, I, um, peaceful and um, hope."

I hope Israel is finishing up by then.

Ditto. I wonder if that is why they decided to hit hard now . . . while they have US support. Should have done it months ago as time is a tickin’

I hope Israel is finishing up by then.

They just got the signal to kick it up a notch or two.

Even if they’re not finished, they will just roll their eyes
at whatever Hussein could possibly “say about Gaza”. Wonder
if he can say it without stutt-tt-tt-tt-ering.

We are giving The One (piss be upon him) the same respect that GWB was given for eight years.

Not impeachment again! We just had eight years of that. Why not wait until Obama at least commits a crime?

"we're going to engage effectively and consistently in the peace process."

The mis-named "peace process" is pure liberal BULLSPIT.

The past 15+ years have been especially egregious as an unending series of farcical liberal "peace process" attempts to further erode Israel's security have provided concession after concession to the Paleo-Nazis without providing anything resembling "peace"......

Obama and his type of naive liberal suck-ups continue to coddle terrorists. The Bush admin. isn't always any better, especially Rice/Powell and the permanent bureaucrats of the State Dept......

We can only hope that what Obama is signalling is not a deep switch to an anti-Israel policy. Everything about his past associations, politics, and the left wing dems - tells me that Obama is an anti-Israel moslem nation sympathizer.

Just laughing at him is all he deserves. No more effort. The effort should be made to expose him to the public that knew nothing about him. McCain’s fault.

Israel better be finished. Obama will blame them and cut off supplies to them.

"“Some of my friends support Israel in this conflict, some other friends of mine strongly support the forces in Gaza, and I of course, stand with my friends.”

“Now can I just have my Slurpee in peace?”

Funny that you should mention a drink. . .

Zec 12:2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.

Fox News had a fellow on who worked for the CIA for 25 years.

He flatly stated he thinks Obama picked Leon to dismantle the CIA.

We can only hope that what Obama is signalling is not a deep switch to an anti-Israel policy.

Obama's not been too afraid of alienating those who elected him, the anti-war left is upset with his national security team, and the gays are PO'ed about Rick Warren. It would not surprise me if Zero turned his back on the Jews who voted for him overwhelmingly.

That's why now is the time for Israel to do something decisive, and they took the opportunity. The imminent defeat of Iran's client state of Hamas might just provoke that Iranian nut case into doing something stupid enough to get his nuclear facilities blown to kingdom come before Barry can get his hand off of the Koran.
