ST. AUGUSTINE BEACH -- One of the newest home owners in St. Augustine Beach, former 1972 Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern of South Dakota, said Saturday that he came to this area to enjoy its history and to escape the long winters in his home state.

"This is just what I need," he said. "I visited a few years back and was impressed. So, three months ago, I looked it over and decided to settle here. I've had a wonderful welcome from people."

He taught college for 4 years (at Dakota Wesleyan University, in Mitchell, S.D.), 1949-1953.

Why doesn’t George buy another hotel and run it into the ground like he did the last one he owned in Connecticut in the late 80’s?

Funny how politicians luck into deals like that. Barry got a good deal on his house.

Florida’s loss is South Dakota’s gain. Let the befuddled old fool die there.

It wasn’t meant to immunize him. I merely wanted to point out that at one point in his life, he was an honorable man.

My sister in law and her husband live on St Aug Beach. I am sure they are happy to have another liberal in residence there. Christmas was a blast here when I got into an argument over whether the Zero is a Natural Born Citizen. I still am holding out hope that he gets the hook off the podium on the 20th before he gets a chance to pull off the final fraud in this election by saying so help me God.

He was a real hero, flying bombing missions over German positions in northern Italy, Austria and southern Germany from his base in southern Italy

Great info. Thanks.

He was a real hero, flying bombing missions over German positions in northern Italy, Austria and southern Germany from his base in southern Italy. McGovern's service to his country in WWII is indeed laudable. But don't forget for Liberals that was the Holy War and even they supported our military then. The question is in what way did he serve his country after that war? I submit that being a Leftist senator epitomizing the anti-war rabble was not a positive contribution. Furthermore, the Democrat Party got delivered into the hands of the Leftist's radicals who control it today due to McGovern's "reforms".

Too bad ole Peg McIntire missed this, she would have been camped on his lawn! I’ve been here since 1946, it sure isn’t the same place now.

I dug this recent McGovern op-ed out for you. Appears that the experience of owning a real estate has had an effect on his thinking.

Either that or he’s been lurking here.

A question for Freepers. I grew up in Michigan, which is mostly cold in the winter, but not bitter cold. (Rarely hits 0*).

Assuming you have lived in cold climate for much of your life is there any stats on whether moving somewhere warm at age 70 or later is actually good for you?

My Mom (age 78) found AZ too warm even in the spring and relocated back to the temperate zone.

I have this sneaking suspicion that while hot weather might feel good, it’s not as healthy as living in the cold.

Opinions?

The happiest and healthiest folks I know winter in Arizona and summer on the BC coast.

Perfection.

Gen. Victor Krulak, USMC, died in late December—he would have been 96 on Jan. 7, 2009. He lived in San Diego—who’s to say how long he might have survived somewhere else?
