Virginia: Crime Panel Deadlocks on Gun Show Rule

RICHMOND, Jan. 13 -- The Virginia State Crime Commission on Tuesday declined to endorse closing the so-called gun show loophole in Virginia law, heightening uncertainty about the prospects of success in the General Assembly.

The deadlocked vote -- taken before a large crowd that included gun owners, at least one survivor of the Virginia Tech shootings and friends and relatives of other massacre victims -- highlighted an enduring split between country and city that transcends party affiliation in Virginia.

Two key commission members bucked their parties' habitual views of gun control measures. The commission's chairman, Del. David B. Albo (R-Fairfax), voted to recommend that the General Assembly close the loophole by requiring all gun buyers to undergo an electronic background check before any sale, including purchases at gun shows. But House Minority Leader Ward L. Armstrong (D-Henry), who noted the economic importance of an annual gun show in his economically depressed rural district, voted no.

D. Michael White, whose daughter Nicole was one of the 32 people killed in the April 16, 2007, shooting on the Virginia Tech campus, expressed frustration at the commission's inaction.

ASSOCIATED PRESS Students and family members of the Virginia
Tech shooting victims lie on the grounds of the state Capitol to promote
closing the gun-show "loophole," after a meeting of the State Crime Commission in Richmond on Tuesday.

Dramatic theater, but the Virginia Tech shooter didn't purchase any weapons at a gun show.

One can only wonder if these emotionally bent gun-grabbers would have had pioneer wagon trains go without arms and depend only on the cavalry.

These filth are desecrating the memory of those who were killed.

Have to separate myself from my old buddy Albo on this one. Given the dire straits we are facing ~ an aggressively anti-humanist regime, tough economic times, illegal aliens murdering large numbers of Americans at will ~ etc., he should be sponsoring an Armed Militia act which will add to the state budget the funding of the total arming of the citizens of the state with new military style weaponry, including in certain instances, artillery and armor.

You can see Dave is rather far from my point of view on the matter.

Yes, they would. Read about the various wars that occured at the time of Bacon's Rebellion. The Quakers then in Pennsylvania and Maryland demanded the settlers in the frontier regions NOT BE ARMED.

William Penn made a big mistake bringing those guys here.

And sarah brady’s husband was shot with a .22 revolver, about the only firearm she doesn’t want to ban. Libs don’t allow logic to intrude in their world.

We already undergo an electronic background check at gun shows. Have to show Photo ID. fill out the form. Then the vendor calls in, gives SS# name address birth date etc....
On the other end the individual accesses state and federal databases looking for criminal convictions or other disqualifications. gives the approval number back to the vendor and that completes the process.

What the hell is the so called loophole at gun shows that makes them any different than going to a gun shop?

These people are freaks.

The "loophole" is not a loophole at all; it's just being called such to manipulate public opinion. What they're calling a loophole is the fact that non-dealers, i.e., private sellers such as me and probably you, are not required to do background checks on their buyers, anywhere, including at gun shows.

Just another turn of the vise.

They must be referring to the people who walk around with guns that have a price attached to the barrel. Every time I purchased a weapon at a gun show in Virginia I had to fill out forms and undergo a background check.

I respect VT’s academics but these poor fools protesting the gun show loophole are barking up the wrong tree.

Those people at VT were killed because they were disarmed by their legislature and school administration. Their constitutional right to defend their lives was stripped away. 31 people dead and the sheep still haven’t learned that there is no such thing as a gun-free zone.

The government has been itching to somehow regulate private sale of firearms. Typical government interference with private property rights.

That right there is why I always cheer against Virginia Tech in football. I don't care if Ohio State is playing them. I don't care if Florida is playing them. I don't care if Oklahoma is playing them, I am always hoping that those stupid Virginia Tech bastards lose every game they play.

Virginia Tech maintained and still maintains a "NO GUNS ALLOWED" policy, and their leadership is partially responsible for the HIGH BODY COUNT during Seung-Hui Cho's rampage. I hope they get their stupid democrat asses sued into oblivion, and I hope that they lose every game they play next season.

From the article:

"David Briggman, a resident of Keezletown in Rockingham County, has made it his personal mission to challenge state colleges' authority to enact tougher gun restrictions than the state.

Briggman, who is a former police officer, said he forced Blue Ridge Community College to allow him to carry a gun onto campus while a student. And he sued James Madison University over its ban on concealed weapons even among permit holders. While JMU's policy still stands, Briggman said he has been told by campus police officials that they will not arrest visitors who carry a gun legally.

'It's extremely easy to challenge university policy by looking at ... whether they are given the statutory authority to regulate firearms on campus, and of course, they're not,' Briggman said Tuesday."

Um, DUH!! Why aren’t these morons protesting the gun free policies that victimized their loved ones? Are people too stupid to learn from events??? If a substantial number of students and faculty were armed, the murderer might have thought twice, and even if he were too insane to do so, the death toll would have been a tiny fraction of what it ended up being.

There is no “loophole”. Licensed dealers (FFL’s) have to conduct a check whether they sell you a gun at their shop, at a gun show, or elsewhere.

A private seller, selling a gun he owns or a few, is not required to do so whether he sells it to you at a gun show or in his garage.

See, no “loophole”.
