I’ve never thought of the peace symbol that way because the Vietnam war was really before my generation, but I could see how that would change your view about the symbol.

Not sure exactly when the peace symbol was born, but it had it's significance in the minds and hearts of the Timothy Leary "turn on tune out" drug culture, living in communes/dumpster diving grocery shopping and Anarchy - not doing what "The Man" told them, living outside of society, "anti establishment" (forget working, church, responsibilities, let's get high and screw!).

I've heard people call the peace sign an upside down cross, but it's not IMO.

Myself, I figure if you look at the 3 downward prongs, they originaly stand for Sex, Drugs, & Rock'nRoll, but quickly evolve into Communism, Anarchy and Atheism.

The upper prong has proved to be the single finger salute, which of course is used to display anger and/or hatred.

There's really nothing sincerely peaceful about the peace sign.
