The lowest temperature ever recorded in the state of Maine occurred this morning, according to preliminary data from the National Weather Service. The temperature at Big Black River in northern Maine on the Canadian border bottomed out at -50F, besting the old record of -48°F. Here's the scoop from NWS:
At 0730 am EST this morning a USGS gage at Big Black River recorded a low temperature of -50F. This exceeds the current statewide record low temperature of -48F set on January 19th...1925 at Van Buren. This report is considered unofficial until a review of the equipment and data by the state climate extremes committee as to the validity of this report. If the committee ascertains that this is indeed a valid report...a separate public information statement will be issued at that time.
All-time state records are difficult to break. The last time a state record low was set was January 5, 1999, when Congerville, Illinois recorded -36°F. Only one state record high temperature has been set in the past the decade--the 120°F temperature measured in Usta, South Dakota on July 15, 2006.
A frost could occur as far south as areas northeast of Fort Myers Saturday morning. In some areas over the interior, temperatures will not get above the 32-degree mark until Saturday afternoon.
Perhaps the most incredible temperature during the past 24 hours was the 14 below zero recorded at Westhampton Beach, Long Island early Friday morning. That just shows you what clear skies and fresh snow cover can do when there is frigid arctic air in place.
Nice graph. Thanks for posting.
I suspect that polls would now show even less of the real people believe in global warming, just from sheer experience. We may need to bring up your post when summer comes and their memories melt like the ice.
I’m amazed it’s been hanging in the 30’s-40’s here in Seattle.
News is news, but State Records are Rare. Very Rare.
:O)
Cold wave sweeping nation, sets record lows
United States - A record cold front sweeping down from Canada is blanketing much of the United States. At least one new state record (by 2 degrees Fahrenheit) for the coldest temperature ever recorded occurred in Illinois, where in Rochelle temperatures dropped to -38 degrees Fahrenheit today, January 16, 2009.
Can that be true ? Two ALL TIME STATE Record Lows on the same day ?
Aha, proving once and for all, global warming is upon us.
The preliminary readings for Friday are that Two US States hundreds of miles apart and separated by the Great Lakes, both set ALL TIME State Record Lows. Amazing stuff. Now if the Western US was not so warm right now, the coffin on Global Warming would have been nailed shut on Friday. But the Global Warming side of course will try to play the Extreme angle, because frankly that is all they have left now. At least until next winter.
Meanwhile the evil troll Henry Waxman and the rest of the democrat party are preparing to destroy whatever is left of the US economy in their astonishing Global Warming mega-hoax.
Global Warming Marxists are in full control in Washington.
We are all so very, very screwed.
Not as screwed as the people who believe them.
Cold snaps 124-year-old record
Icy temperatures Friday shattered a 124-year-old record in Fredericton for Jan. 16.
"Indeed, in Fredericton we did set a record cold temperature this morning (at) -34.3 C," said Claude Cote, a meteorologist with Environment Canada on Friday.
"The old record (for Jan. 16) was -33.9, set in 1884."
Thai temperatures 'coldest in a decade'
The country has been gripped in a cold spell that blew down from China earlier this month and is likely to last until February, the Thai Meteorological Department said Saturday.
"We have not had this kind of a cold spell in Thailand for many years," Chukiat said. "Seven of our weather stations around the country have recorded the lowest temperature in 10 years."
The country's agriculture has been hit especially hard by the cold weather.
Snake farmers in parts of the country have complained their slithery reptiles are dying from exposure, the newspaper said, while fish farmers in the country's south said their sea bass were dying off.
Alaskan air comes down to Iowa
Excerpt - There's an old saying in the weather biz: When it warms up in Alaska, it'll be cold in Iowa three or four days later.
Folks in Huxley were asked to crank down their thermostats because the cold weather threatened the town's natural gas supply.
"There was plenty of natural gas, but it was limited by the size of the line feeding Huxley," said Dave Koch, a spokesman for Alliant Energy. "The concern was there would be more usage than system could supply. We asked people to conserve by turning the thermostat down by 5 degrees."
Something else we need to worry about if Global Cooling continues. Are the main Gas Feed lines to your town big enough to handle the demand required during the low temperature peaks ?
