Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE:GCI) today said it is offering to sell certain assets of the Tucson (AZ) Citizen. If a sale is not completed by March 21, 2009, Gannett said it will have to close the newspaper.
"The Tucson Citizen has been part of Gannett since 1976 and we deeply regret having to take this step. But dramatic changes in our industry combined with the difficult economy - particularly in this region - mean it is no longer viable for our partnership with Lee Enterprises Incorporated to produce two daily newspapers in Tucson," said Bob Dickey, president of the U.S. Community Publishing division of Gannett. "We applaud the hard work and ongoing efforts of our employees at the newspaper. Their dedication to journalism and to the community of Tucson deserves the highest praise. We hope for a quick and positive response to this offer."
Bummer dude.
Actually, conservative out to purchase this and hire REAL journalists. I bet it would SOON be profitable...
As a matter of fact....this ought to be considered for many newspapers.... hmmmm....
Some conservative should BUY IT..
Living in Tucson, the audacity of these two rags has always surprised me. Granted, Tucson is a far left college town run by Democratic idiots who never built freeways and won’t light the city because of an observatory.
“Soviet Citizen” can take a walk and “Red Star” can go quickly into the night too.
Amen, see ya’ later you liberal pukes!
The Red Star will not be far behind. Talk about a lefty fishwrap!
Now if they would only sell off the Tucson “Red Star”.
You know, a smart conservative with some money could buy this for a song and change the entire direction of the paper. Fire all the lib writers, get a bunch of conservative (but fair) writers, who know the difference between a straight NEWS story and REAL reporting, and EDITORIALIZING, and keep opinion strictly on the editorial page.
