Canal ice helps Dutch rediscover national identity

NIEUWERKERK AAN DEN IJSSEL, Netherlands: For the first time in 12 years, the Netherlands' canals froze this month, bringing the Dutch, who like their tulips in neat rows, a heady mix of pandemonium and euphoria.

Hundreds of thousands of skaters, their cheeks as red as apples in the freezing temperatures, took to the ice, and hospital wards were filled with dozens of people with fractured arms, sprained ankles and broken legs.

Train engineers were ordered to go slowly to avoid hitting skaters who clambered across railway tracks to get from one frozen canal to another. Even the minister of defense, an avid skater, fell and broke his wrist. His ministry announced that the national defense remained in safe hands, even if one of them was in a cast.

In the 19th century, when Hans Brinker, the hero of the novel in which he tries to win a pair of silver skates, coasted along Holland's ice, the canals froze almost every year. But water pollution and climate change have made this so rare that today a boy of 15, Brinker's age, may never have seen a frozen canal, or at least remember one. Until, that is, this year.

They are "little Ice Age" deniers.

How does pollution prevent water from freezing?

"How does pollution prevent water from freezing?"

Yes, you lit on the same damned sentence that I did. I thought this piece would finally be free of the usual NYT/IHT garbage, but no, they had to work in “water pollution and climate change.”

Hey, stupids, this is climate change. It’s COLDER this winter. And last winter, too.

How long before Holland’s Muslims take offense and issue a fatwa declaring that skating on canals blasphemes the Prophet and is unIslamic?

In the future, when the canals freeze over again, they will be cited as evidence off climate change....

read that the temp in Fairbanks, AK has had a 96 degree swing in the last 5 days, going from a low in the -40’s to a high of 50 (something) yesterday.

looks like the ROVE/BUSH greenhouse gas machine started up in FAIRBANKS.

The reason my Dutch friend said “I BELIEVE in global warming” is because the canals no longer froze in winter. I will point this out to her. he he!

I guess that would depend on the pollutant (eg. salt ethylene glycol, etc.)

It got down to -10 last night here in Cleveland Oh.
I think I’ve seen it colder in my lifetime here, but not by much and not very often.

Various chemicals change the freezing point. Salt or alcohol will drop it which is why road salt and antifreeze work.

When will all the Muzzies declare that ice skating is not allowed by the Koran and declare a fatwa.

Dayton hit its lowest temperature in 15 years Friday morning.

My first thought, after reading that first paragraph, was that for at least a single day the Dutch could imagine they were back in the old Holland before the Muslim immigrant invation.

Then, of course, the IHT had to spoil it with their environmentalist whining.

It was -20 here last night in Vermont, and -25 or 30 the night before.

“Hey, stupids, this is climate change. It’s COLDER this winter. And last winter, too.”

I have spent the morning, unsuccessfully at this point, trying to unfreeze our water supply pipes with a hair dryer. These global warming nudniks can bite me.

"Canal ice helps Dutch rediscover national identity"

The Dutch have been skating on thin ice ever since the ROP gained a foothold in Holland.
