Inauguration Is Climax to 2 Years of Increasing Protection Around Obama
The Washington Post / washingtonpost.com ^ | Sunday, January 18, 2009; Page A17 | By Spencer S. Hsu, Washington Post Staff Writer

As jubilant Democrats nominated Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) for president in a Denver convention hall in late August, the U.S. Secret Service in Washington placed its largest ever order for bulletproof glass.

The service requested about 5 tons of "transparent armor," laminated with four layers of virtually unbreakable plastic to resist chemicals, flames and multiple gunshots. When Obama is sworn in as the nation's 44th president Tuesday, the ballistic shield will provide a final layer of safety in a massive exercise in presidential security, the culmination of two years of a steady ratcheting up of the protection around Obama to a level unseen for any of his predecessors.

"I don't think there could have been any higher-order target for [Osama] bin Laden than [President Bush], because this president launched the attack on Afghanistan," Bush Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, whose department oversees the Secret Service, told the Washington Post last month. "I think what will be different perhaps for the new president is [he] may excite the attention of some domestic groups that maybe were not that engaged previously. And so that's an issue we're going to have to be looking at."

Privately, current and former Secret Service and U.S. intelligence officials interviewed for this article confirmed that Obama's ascent has led to spikes in threatening "chatter" on white supremacist Web sites and a smattering of incidents around the country that led to intensive investigation.

To what Parties have the last presidents belonged on whom there was an assasination attempt? And with whom (left or right) were the assasins afiliated?

But he’s The One, the messiah. If someone offs him, we would just have to sit tight for three days and open up his casket, wouldn’t we?

And that's just by the media.

Good question. Let's see,

Kennedy: Lee Harvey Oswald
Ford (attempt): Evelyn "Squeaky" Fromme
Reagan (attempt): John Hinckley

More from the article:

[...]

At the executive mansion, already guarded by rooftop antiaircraft artillery systems and chemical, biological and nuclear detection equipment, Obama will find his new home a fortress recently outfitted with new state-of-the-art room alarms and monitoring systems and upgraded security post communications, according to the Secret Service.

Sullivan said his agency "employs every countermeasure we can employ to protect those we are entrusted to protect," and that Obama is no different, despite what he called greater "sensitivity" among law enforcement, the media and the public.

"There's no doubt the security of this president is going to get more attention from the public. But it's going to get no less attention from us," Sullivan said. "The fact that President-elect Obama is African American, . . . we're aware of the historical significance of it, and I can tell you that every man and woman in this organization is committed to ensuring the safety of him and his family."

Not if they use anti-semitism as a barometer, which is pervasive at those supremacist sites.

They might be concerned about some of the posts here but I seriously doubt anyone here, despite how much we may despise 0bama, or anyone else in political spotlights, would ever take matters into their own hands and do something so terrible as to cause the death or do harm to those whom we do not like or respect. I think the people here are smart enough to know better. We use this site to vent our frustrations at our own side, if you will, so I think we, though mostly conservative, are level headed. I would hope so.
When one considers the language used on other websites and the absolute hatred on some of those liberal sites, this is mild. We are strong about our feelings but for the large part do not get vulgar about it nor make threats.

Tiresome.

Liberal idiots several times called for Bush’s assassination on TV, and nothing was done. But if anyone looked crosseyed at Bill Clinton, they were immediately taken into custody.

I guess we’re going to hear more and more nonsense about the threat of “right wing militias” and all that other nonsense that clinton used to justify killing the kids at Waco.

What’s particularly disturbing is that the FBI and the Secret Service seem only too eager to join the political propagandists.

Virtually all the assassins for the past hundred years have been leftists, and virtually all the mob violence in the U.S. has come from leftists. JFK was shot by a flaming Communist. RFK was shot by a Muslim. Reagan was shot by a nutcase. Pope JP II was shot by a Turk enlisted by the KGB.

Sure, they have to do their job, protecting the president, but this kind of left-sided response is nonsense.

Assassinations:

President: Abraham Lincoln (R)
Assassin: John Wilkes Booth
Political identity and motive:
Booth was a Democrat, angry that Lincoln had freed the slaves and preserved the Union.

January 01, 2008
Guns don’t kill presidents, Democrats do.

Politically motivated presidential assassinations come from only one side of the political spectrum.

By Christopher Cook

President: James A. Garfield (R)
Assassin: Charles J. Guiteau
Political identity and motive:
Guiteau was frustrated that he did not receive a political appointment in the Garfield administration, and he believed “that God had commanded him to kill the ungrateful President.” Since we can assume that God did not, in fact, command him in this way, we must deem Guiteau mentally unstable.

President: William McKinley (R)
Assassin: Leon Czolgosz
Political identity and motive:
Czolgosz was an anarchist who believed that “there was a great injustice in American society, an inequality which allowed the wealthy to enrich themselves by exploiting the poor,” and that he had to do something about it. Mimicking the assassination of King Umberto I of Italy, done for similar reasons, he shot and killed McKinley. Oddly, Czolgosz had earlier voted Republican, but the assassination motive was clearly as described above.

President: John F. Kennedy (D)
Assassin: Lee Harvey Oswald
Political identity and motive:
Defector to the USSR. Earlier attempted to kill General Edwin Walker, who was “an outspoken anti-communist, segregationist and member of the John Birch Society.” Controversy about the assassination continues to persist, and Oswald was killed before any real digging could be done, so we are primarily left with his identity (as a defector to the USSR) as the prime indicator.

Attempts:

President: Andrew Jackson (D)
Would-be assassin: Richard Lawrence
Political identity and motive:
Lawrence was mentally ill, suffering from polymorphous delusions.

President: Theodore Roosevelt (R and Bull Moose)
Would-be assassin: John F. Schrank
Political identity and motive:
Schrank was mentally ill; he claimed “that it was the ghost of William McKinley that told him to perform the act.”

President: Franklin D. Roosevelt (D)
Would-be assassin: Giuseppe Zangara
Political identity and motive:
“In the Dade County Courthouse jail, Zangara confessed and stated: ‘I have the gun in my hand. I kill kings and presidents first and next all capitalists.’” From Zangara’s own words, much can be taken. However, he may also have been mentally ill. (Perhaps anyone who wants to kill a president is a touch deranged.)

President: Harry S Truman (D)
Would-be assassin: Oscar Collazo and Griselio Torresola
Political identity and motive:
Oscar Collazo and Griselio Torresola were members of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party. Puerto Rican Nationalists, represented by Marxist terrorist groups such as FALN, who were responsible for scores of bombings in the U.S.; they were arguably the most active terrorist group in U.S. history. (Interesting side notes: President Carter freed Collazo in 1979, and President Clinton pardoned several FALN terrorists. Il n’y a aucun ennemi du cote gauche?)

President: John F. Kennedy (D)
Would-be assassin: Richard Paul Pavlick
Political identity and motive:
Pavlick was anti-Catholic, and he was also upset by “the close 1960 U.S. Presidential election, in which Kennedy had defeated Republican Richard Nixon by 118,000 votes.” However, “Judge Emmet C. Choate ruled that Pavlick was unable to distinguish between right and wrong in his actions.” He was kept in a mental hospital for three years. Will this be the closest we get....?

President: Richard M. Nixon (R)
Would-be assassin: Arthur Bremer
Political identity and motive:
Bremer is an interesting case, one that would require more research than we’re doing in this admittedly surface analysis. He hated Nixon, but apparently, he also hated segregation and bigotry, and he did shoot Democratic candidate George Wallace. He also clearly had mental instability. Why did he hate Nixon, and also Wallace? He stated “It is my personal plan to assassinate by pistol either Richard Nixon or George Wallace,” and that his purpose was “to do SOMETHING BOLD AND DRAMATIC, FORCEFUL & DYNAMIC, A STATEMENT of my manhood for the world to see.” These are deep waters, and we’ll have to give this one a pass for now.

President: Richard M. Nixon (R)
Would-be assassin: Samuel Byck
Political identity and motive:
Byck “began to harbor the belief that the government was conspiring to oppress the poor.” He attempted to join the Black Panthers. However, he was also “diagnosed with manic depression, a mental disorder characterized by both depressive ‘lows’ and (less frequently) manic or euphoric ‘highs.’” He had left-wing motives, but he was also mentally unstable.

President: Gerald R. Ford (R)
Would-be assassin: Lynette Fromme
Political identity and motive:
Insane member of the insane Manson Family.

President: Gerald R. Ford (R)
Would-be assassin: Sara Jane Moore
Political identity and motive:
Revolutionary leftist political activist.

President: James E. Carter (D)
Would-be assassin: Raymond Lee Harvey
Political identity and motive:
Harvey was possibly mentally ill, but also, charges were dismissed for lack of evidence. This one doesn’t count.

President: Ronald Reagan (R)
Would-be assassin: John Hinckley, Jr.
Political identity and motive:
Mentally ill, no apparent political motive (despite some absurd references to his connections to the Bush family).

President: George H.W. Bush (R)
Would-be assassin: Operation of sixteen men working for Saddam Hussein’s Iraq
Political identity and motive:
Geopolitical attack/act of war.

President: Bill Clinton (D)
Would-be assassin: Francisco Martin Duran
Political identity and motive:
From Wikipedia:
“Duran pleaded not guilty and mounted an insanity defense, claiming that he was trying to save the world by destroying an alien ‘mist,’ connected by an umbilical cord to an alien in the Colorado mountains. He also claimed to be incited by conservative talk show host Chuck Baker, who spoke on air about ‘armed revolution’ and ‘cleansing’ of the government.

In both cases, these are claims made by Duran. We would need more external information to make a judgment.

President: George W. Bush (R)
Would-be assassin: Vladimir Arutyunian
Political identity and motive:
Georgian national who threw a grenade towards President Bush. Not quite sure yet what his motivation was. Pass for now.

Totals:

Clearly mentally ill (5)

Guiteau
Lawrence
Schrank
Fromme
Hinckley, Jr.

Anti-catholic (and possible Republican) motivation, coupled with mental illness (1):

Pavlick

Left-wing motivations, coupled with mental illness (1):

Byck

Unclear/more info required/weak evidence—pass (4):

Bremer
Harvey
Duran
Arutyunian

Left-leaning political motivation (7):

Booth
Czolgosz
Oswald
Zangara
Collazo
Torresola
Moore

Remove the people who are clearly mentally ill, to leave the people who had a political motivation. That gives us an eight (left) to one (right) ratio of political motivations behind presidential assassinations and attempts.

To be fair to the two among that number who also suffered from some mental illness, one from the left and one from the right, we can remove both of them from the figures.

It seems to me that all the bulletproof glass and transparent, flame-proof armor and security detail snipers in the world wouldn't have stopped William Henry Harrison's appointment with destiny.

It also seems to me that Divine Justice tends to undo the best laid plans of mice and men.

Awww, isn't that cute! Obama blew his nose. Let's applaud...

IMO, that effort should reflect the dominant political strand in the assassin’s life. For example with Guiteau, the assassin of Garfield, Guiteau had been a member of the Oneida commune and was sexual libertine. That would place him on the left. So too Squeaky Fromme — after Obama’s good friend Bernadine Dohrn admired the work of the Manson Family. Nor can you easily claim that Fromme was insane — being a member of murderous left-wing cult is not insanity is it? Perhaps it is! Then shouldn’t Ayers and Dohrn be locked away?

Don’t forget Roosevelt...

Presidents, February 15, 1933

On the evening of February 15, 1933, President-elect Franklin Roosevelt delivered a short speech to a crowd at Maimi’s Bayfront Park. Because of his disability, Roosevelt often spoke from the rear seat of an open touring car rather than making the arduous trip to a platform. When he finished his remarks, the crowd surged forward, but was halted abruptly by six pistol shots fired in rapid succession.

Five people were hit. The most seriously injured was Chicago Mayor Anton J. Cermak, who sustained a stomach wound. The crowd quickly restrained the assailant, but was prevented from doing him bodily harm by Roosevelt’s intercession. Cermak was loaded into the car and comforted on the ride to the hospital by the president-elect. Medical staff credited Roosevelt with preventing the mayor from going into shock, thus giving him a better chance at recovery.

Giuseppe Zangara was the attempted assassin. He was born in Italy, came to the United States in the early 1920s, became a citizen and in 1933 was working as a bricklayer in Miami. Zangara subscribed to no political philosophy, but harbored a hatred for wealthy capitalists. He had blamed Hoover, and later Roosevelt, for the plight of the common man. Probably more important than any political view was the fact that Zangara suffered from chronic and debilitating stomach pain that put him at odds with those around him. In his own words: “I don’t like no peoples.”

Zangara was quickly tried and convicted on charges of assault with the intent to kill; he was sentenced to 80 years in prison. However, on March 6, Mayor Cermak died after lingering for three weeks. Zangara was hastily retried and convicted on murder charges; he insisted on pleading guilty despite the belief of some that doctors had misdiagnosed Cermak’s condition and contributed to his death. On March 5, only five weeks after the attempted assassination, Zangara died in the electric chair in the state prison at Railford.

There was some speculation at the time that perhaps Roosevelt was not the intended target. Walter Winchell, a gossip columnist and radio personality, popularized the idea that Cermak had offended mob leaders in Chicago and had been marked for assassination; no corroborating evidence of that contention has ever surfaced.

The events in Miami were significant for two reasons. First, many in the country were uncertain of what to expect from the man who would become president several weeks later; some were outspokenly fearful, but Roosevelt’s calm and compassion during the incident offered a large measure of reassurance to an anxious public. Second, the assassination attempt underscored the fact that the response of the overwhelming majority of Americans to the hardships of the Depression was orderly and lawful. Zangara was not a socialist or Communist, but a deranged individual. Leftist groups that were critical of American capitalism did grow during the 1930s, but their numbers remained consistently small. The vast majority of citizens were confident that the existing system of government would eventually find the answers to the nation’s ills.

Think Obama would have done the same thing?
