For a century, the narrow canyon leading into California from Mexico provided cover for cattle thieves and opium dealers, bandits, and booze runners. More recently, it has hidden thousands of illegal immigrants on their journey north, sealing its place in border lore.
Now, it's a fading memory.
In 2005, the Bush administration waived state and federal environmental laws to overcome opposition.....
Once a breach in the coastal hills, the gulch is now more like a dam than a passage.
Anyone attempting to cross confronts a 150-foot-high berm that soon will be topped with stadium lighting, video surveillance cameras, and 15-foot-high fencing.
For those who see the canyon border as blight, the gulch is a victim of its notorious past and deserves to be buried forever. "Good riddance," said Donald McDermott, a former US Border Patrol assistant chief who once patrolled the area. "Anything that makes it easier to control the border is a good thing."
In the 1980s, the canyon became a symbol of illegal immigration run amok as tens of thousands of immigrants funneled through the pass into California.
It became a dangerous no man's land, filled with bandits who raped and robbed immigrants and charged tolls for safe passage. The occasional sniper targeted Border Patrol agents. For many years, agents were not allowed to venture alone into the gulch, where their radios didn't work.
Rampant crime in the area prompted the formation of a daring San Diego police unit that was featured in the Joseph Wambaugh book "Lines and Shadows." They dressed as bedraggled illegal immigrants and pounced on bandits who tried to assault them.
"That whole area was very chaotic," Swanson said.

Great idea. We have several freeper/Hunter supporters in the San Diego area, maybe we can chip in and get one done. I wonder how long it would stay up???
Folks, we CAN beat the entrenched mess in Malfunction Junction.
But it will take MASSIVE CITIZEN PRESSURE to fill this swamp.
The FairTax aint perfect no tax IS but it COULD serve as a vital waypoint back to a tax system the Founders MIGHT recognize were they to visit today.

And every concerned citizen should go to as many Congressional Town Hall Meetings as possible if only because they are great theater. If you can go and PUBLICLY ask your congresscritter something like the following, so much the better:
"Except for several lapses in our national character and a brief period surrounding the War Between the States, for America's first 126 years statistically, perhaps the most prosperous and free period in our history -- we funded the legitimate and Constitutional functions of government with INDIRECT taxes on consumption. For our first 126 years we held to the tax system the Founders intended here.
Explain to these good folks why you (do/do not -- as the case warrants) support the Fair Tax (HR 25/S25) which seeks to REPLACE the UNFAIR and INCOMPREHENSIBLE income tax with a FLAT, FAIR national retail sales tax which would eliminate the IRS, one of the most dangerous agencies in government and, not incidentally, require that 12 million illegals pay for some of the welfare and other services theyre currently sucking from the rest of us?"
Remain at the mike and DON'T LET HIM GET AWAY WITH THE OLD POLITICAL TRICK OF ANSWERING SOME OTHER QUESTION.
A few thousand of us doing this on a regular basis will send 'em the message.
Retiring CIA chief Michael Hayden told reporters on Friday that that Mexico could rank alongside Iran as a challenge for Obama perhaps a greater problem than Iraq.
The U.S. Justice Department said last month that Mexican gangs are the biggest organized crime threat to the United States. National security adviser Stephen Hadley said last week that the worsening violence threatens Mexicos very democracy. (NOT to mention OURS!~)

Funny how I saw quite a number of gangs working Obama HQ offices in North Brunswick, New Brunswick and Milltown during campaign season.

I was thinking of you, but didn’t want to ‘volunteer’ you!
Is there an appropriate place we could place such a plaque where it wouldn’t be destroyed? It needs something ‘symbolic’ as well...the capitol, a minuteman, flag, ‘don’t tread on me’.....something in the background.

You should thank Sensenbrenner. He inserted the language to waive the enviro requirements on the San Diego fence and any future border fence into the Real ID Act.

Sensenbrenner did that ALL by his little self, eh?
Run along, Ben, You’ve won. No need to disparage the GONE Duncan Hunter any longer. Your open border message has been received loud and clear by the powers that be. You’ll get the amnesty, your side gets it all...isn’t victory enough for ya?
First you would have to get permission from the Border Patrol or whatever arm of government controls the property to mount something on the fence, otherwise I suspect they would come after you. You can’t just go around hanging things on federal property. But yes, Duncan Hunter AND Mr. Sensenbrenner deserve to be recognized for this accomplishment — Hunter for plugging away at it for more than a decade, and never giving up, and Mr. S. for having the legislative skills to do an end run around the open-border enviros and their fellow travelers in Congress.
