Audi buys out Inauguration Day news coverage, touches the third rail of politics

In what some might consider an “audacious” move, Audi of America has bought the inauguration of the next president of the United States. And that’s not hyperbole.

In a move that is likely to offend many, Audi has purchased exclusive sponsorship of the streaming broadcasts on four major news websites, ABCNews.com, CBSNews.com, MSNBC.com and WashingtonPost.com. Audi notes that this is “the first time a sponsor has brought MSNBC.com’s live stream of the presidential inauguration speech to viewers commercial free and the first time CBSNews.com will have an exclusive sponsor of the speech online.”

. . .

According to Johan de Nysschen, president of Audi of America, “Regardless of political preferences, the inauguration represents a unique moment of progress.” Audi, he says, wants to “share this experience and begin a conversation about innovation, technology and the path ahead.”

Well, no, Johan de Nysschen, president of Audi of America, this inauguration represents a unique moment of tragedy for this country and for all freedom-loving people around the world.

I hope that it also represents a unique moment of tragedy for Audi - what a foolish mistake to align your company with ODumbo. May you reap what you sow...

Audi thinks that welfare moms, homeless bums and gangbangers buy their product? Huh?

Yes, as far as I am concerned, AUDI just wasted one hell of a lot of money. I certainly will not watch this disaster in the making....

Apparently Audi is unaware of the demographics of their typical customer.

And this is suprising . . . why? Daimler-Porsch would’ve paid for the 1936 Nuremberg Rally if they’d had the forsight, market and national media system. Audi stands poised to become the next ride of the DC elite and their sycophants in the hinterlands.

It would seem their demographics don't include me...

Welp, I guess this means I won’t root for Audi in any motorsports series they run in the future (they’re out of endurance racing but they might supply engines for IndyCar in ‘11).

nah, they just hope that the “hope and change” euphoria will make people walk into a showroom and buy a car-$0 down and 0% interest (but the payments will only be $700\month)

Wasn’t there some Arnold Swarzenegger movie similiar to this type of thing?

Vaguely familiar, but not quite... I don’t know.

If not, it should have been!

A few tidbits from the article, "One on One With Audi of America's New Boss, Johan de Nysschen" shed some light on this ploy:

MB: Can you share any of your marketing communication plans for the future?

JdN: I have given the direction to my marketing team that we definitely need to work hard and will do this in conjunction with our colleagues in Ingolstadt to put more “emotionalization” into our communications.

. . .

JdN: Let me give you some feedback . . . And one needs to be candid about these things. The communications that go out from here in the future will not be less adventurous, but more appealing to the senses of the heart, not rational thinking and will have an up-market, prestigious character to support our positioning.

So clearly they're looking for customers with the same kind of superficial, irrational, emotions-before-reality, wishful thinking that typifies the clueless suburban Obama voter.

I'm going to buy a new car in 2009. It will not be an Audi...

Semi-sarcastic ;-) We had a Volvo SUV and I always kidded my husband that we’d be mistaken for liberals. The W04 sticker always threw them off.

But now I have an Escalade so I’m big and bag and American again!
