Reid turns nose up at Papa John’s Pizza
The Hill ^ | 1/14/2009 | Betsy Rothstein

Papa John’s Pizza is celebrating its 25th anniversary, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid couldn’t care less.

During an interview with The Hill last week, Reid (D-Nev.) stopped mid-sentence to check his BlackBerry for what could have been a very important e-mail.

A message from Rahm Emanuel? A breaking development on the Senate floor? Not quite.

“Help Us Celebrate Our 25th Anniversary With a $0.25 Pizza!” read the e-mail from Papa John’s.

Reid snapped, “Purchase a pizza for a quarter? I don’t like pizza, and I especially don’t like Papa John’s Pizza!”

Reid then tried to get back to the question at hand, but his pizza rant threw him off.

After a moment, Reid asked, “Where were we?”

Tish Muldoon, a spokeswoman for Papa John’s, said that the majority leader must have previously ordered from Papa John’s or opted in for company e-mails, because the restaurant chain does not send out spam.

Regardless, Muldoon said, “We would love to become his favorite pizza. The next time, if he wants, the pizza is on us.”

Muldoon said, “We would love to become his favorite pizza. The next time, if he wants, the pizza is on us.”

That's not a good idea. Many companies have policies regarding "gifts" to politicians. Giving away a free pizza to a Senator will result in lots of paperwork for Papa John's.

Now, if they gave Reid free boxing tickets...

Harry Reid is used to his little bowl of pudding with orange juice in his ducky cup. Pizza is too grown up.

Big Ed’s Pizza here in Oak Ridge, Tennessee is the only way to go. Ed was a Marine in WWII, and after two Purple Hearts and a couple other medals, decided to start a pizza place. He started down in Georgia, then eventually moved here to the Secret City. All they serve is pizza, soft drinks, tea and beer. No fancy salad bar or anything like that. Carry out boxes? No way - you get it on a card board circle in a paper bag. The employees (all local high schoolers, and all having to keep a C average or higher) will willingly help you carry the pies out to the car. Ed passed away a few years ago, and his son David, also a Marine, is now running the place. The pizza is great, but the ambience of the place is awesome - big time military supporters, all sorts of trophies and plaques on the wall - “thank yous” from special forces groups that they’ve fed, SWAT teams that they’ve fed - a big oil painting of Ed on the wall, and a book about Marine shooters featuring an article about Ed and his time as a counter-sniper in the Pacific theater.

Hmmm...might be good for dinner tonight.

Sorry, I was unclear. I moved to Chicago where Giordano’s is located.

I would “dis-commend” visiting my home town to you and anyone else who might think of such. It’s just like Flint, only smaller.

Why was this even a news story?

Don’t news outlets have editors anymore?

youse guys can’t get good pizza from a chain!

Absolutely true. When I was living in the Northwest, I'd eat Pizza Hut, Papa John's, and Papa Murphy's, but since I moved to NY a couple of years ago, I've been very spoiled by the good stuff!

I know. That is why I said I seldom to never go there...lol.

Now that I know they don’t even have a good pizza joint I have one less reason to go.

"More insulin=more hunger=more double whoppers with cheese=more obesity."

Of course, that is correct, but it really dovetails with the problem of a total lack of discipline in consumption anymore. If you've 2 whoppers today and are still physically hungry ... something has to click, 'you know, I've had 2 whoppers today - maybe I should have a salad. Or maybe I should wait a few hours and have grilled chicken.'

There are those of us that have consumed HFCS for decades and are not obese. There are also those of us that can say to yourself, 'this 5 pounds I've gained has to come off'. When it gets to 30, 50, 100 pounds or more, it is because you have no discipline, no respect for yourself and no consideration for those around you.

We have got to stop placing more blame on the food than we do the people consuming the food before the obesity problem begins to get solved. As a side note ... we have also got to stop making spandex pants in plus sizes. Yikes!

Hehehe. You really think people eat more because they are actually hungry? Like Jesse Ventura said: “just push back from the table.”

First time I ever agreed with that Nevada phony in my life.

Same thoughts here. I eat pizza twice a year - my first and last at the same meal.

Here’s our method loosely based on a Wolfgang Puck recipe.

Pizza Dough

Ingredients:

1 pkg active dry yeast
1 tsp honey
1 cup warm water (105-115 deg. Fah)
3 cups all Purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil, plus some more for brushing later
toppings of your choice.

Method:

1. In a small bowl dissolve the yeast and the honey in 1/4 cup of the warm water.

2. In a food processor fitted with the steel blade combine the flour and salt in the bowl, pulse once or twice to mix the salt and flour, and then add all the rest of the ingredients. Pulse until the dough forms a ball.

3. Turn the dough out onto a clean work surface and knead by hand 2-3 minutes longer. The dough should be smooth and firm. Cover the dough with a clean, damp towel and let it rise in a warm draftless, cat hair free spot for about 30 minutes.

4. Divide the dough ball evenly into four equal balls. knead each ball for a minute or so, then roll each ball on the work surface with a cupped hand until it’s smooth for about a minute or so. Cover and let rest for half an hour or so.

At this point you can use’m, or wrap them and refrigerate them, or freeze them. Our experience is the pizza dough will last forever in the freezer, or until that day you accidentally find it lodged behind a drawer in the back, bottom of the freezer.

We find it best to pull this dough into the shape we want rather than roller it with a pin. ANH!...so it isn’t perfectly round, so what LOL.
