That is certainly true in Cary, NC.

My uncle, a yankee, lives there now, but I'm confident he's more in tune with the locals than he is with his fellow invaders from the north.

There are “Lee” middle names as far back as anyone can remember...

Lee did make some brilliant military moves, but his success was mostly due to the gross incompetence of the Union generals. And Lee’s actions at Gettysburg were just plain stupid. He is not the most over-rated general in history (Macarthur and Montgomery vie for that honor), but he is in the top ten.

He's got to find one first!

A true "local" in Cary would be about as hard to find as a conservative out on the National Mall tomorrow! :)

You would do well to remember that the most hallowed ground is that which is consecrated in defeat.

‘Let em up easy’ were Lincoln’s instructions, and Grant’s perfomance at Appromatox exemplified it.

I live in Georgetown Ohio, Grant’s home as a child. Every year we have ‘Grant Days’...which includes a mounted reenactment of ‘the Greatest Raid’ which literally came across our property in July of 1863.

Its held every April, and if you get a chance its worth coming by and seeing it for yourself. Very cool. Local ‘reenactors’ include dead on ‘Grant’ and ‘Lee’ and ‘Lincoln’ wandering around speaking with everybody.

Its a great time.

...Travis come down to Dixie any time you can....and you’re right; it’s character is changing right before our eyes....the North and South got along very well for years after the war....up to about the mid 1960s....ML King and the Civil Rights movement destroyed all that...and it’s getting worse....Obama will be another milestone on the road to the coming civil war which will be even worse than the last one because it will be race war.

Yankee troll.

It’s probably not his fault if he went to a public school in the North.

Garbage in, garbage out.

To: We Dare Defend Our Rights

It is a small consolation prize, since the south didn’t win, but at least more northerners did die in that war.

>>Robert E. Lee was a traitor to the United State of America. He should have been hanged along with all Confederate officers.<<

Which would have accomplished, what? The North fought to preserve the Union. Hanging men who, in good conscience opposed government policies, would have done more harm to the Union than the war ever could.

Hanging them would have made them martyrs and we all know how that turns out. Me, I will celebrate Robert E. Lee’s birthday as he would have wanted, quietly and reflective.

We may ALL be called upon soon to fight for what we believe or become slaves of a tyrannical government. What will you do then?

Robert E. Lee graduated from West Point at the head of his class and is still one of only six cadets to graduate from West Point without a single demerit.

Who were the other five?

Very enlightening article. Thanks.

I read something about those demerits in the WSJ. Apparently, Lee had some demerits, but the merits exactly canceled out the the demerits. What is unusual is getting enough merits to cancel the demerits.

Why do so many people believe that the War of Northern Aggression was about slavery? Why do they accept what they read in textbooks written and compiled after 1950 when the “revision-conquistas” took over writing lies and propaganda?

The WAR was fought for some of the same reasons that the American Revolution was fought. States Rights to live peacefully and not be harangued by Big Government. The winning “wonderful” North slapped tariffs on items manufactured in the South and failed to repeal them until the 1960’s. And you wonder why we still cry “The South Will Rise Again?” http://www.etymonline.com/cw/economics.htm

http://www.tax.org/Museum/1861-1865.htm You might want to start with http://www.tax.org/Museum/default.htm to read ALL about taxes and tariffs.

GREAT read and worth the time. Read it tomorrow instead of listening or watching Zero’s Coronation.

We Southerners carry the Bonnie Blue Flag, the Confederate Battle Flag, the Gadsden Flag, the Moultrie Flag, the Culpeper Flag. None of those EVER flew over a slave ship. The “Stars and Stripes” you so proudly hail was the Flag flying on Slave Ships; the Flag under which Africans were sold to Northerners and Southerners alike.

History books may be revised, but the truth is burned into every Southerner’s heart. Veritas vos Liberabit.

It showed how forward thinking the Union leader were. They knew that the only way to have true peace was a gentle hand in dealing with the South.
Grant and Lee were what made the USA great. Both Generals showed that no matter what, we are still Americans.
Now, lets get back to trashing Obama instead of each other.

Could not let this comment pass. General Lee was not “stupid” at Gettysburg. Incompetent Union generals aside, Any student of the military history knows that Lee’s cavalry (led by JEB Stuart) was delayed. Some say it was a bid for glory by Stuart, others demonstrate that they were engaged several times with outriders of Meade’s columns. In that time of limited military intel, Lee was blind as to the size of the enemy and its disposition. Had he taken the heights on the first day supplied by allies in Maryland, and lured Meade into attacking, the outcome would have been vastly different. Gettysburg was a politically calculated move, and would have been the final straw— w/ Lincoln thrown out and pro-Southern factions in the North (as in NYC) treating for peace, recognition by Great Britain and France and the creation of the Constitutionally valid secession of the Confederate States of America.

As for those here minimizing the discussion to slavery- it plays right into the hands of the oligarchs who still try to run us from the Northeast, with their smug liberalism and crass industrial socialism. It wasn’t about slavery, and Lincoln didn’t give a crap about slaves except as political capital. Y’all need to read- and something other than is put out by Princeton. The facts of the time are appalling. And now we can look forward to a usurper, a leftist tyrant, who is not even a descendant of legitimate African-Americans. A usurper “serving” these same master global puppeteers.

Regarding MacArthur: the brilliance of the Pacific campaign, Phillipines, the management of post Tojo Japan— all are widely acknowledged. Our leaders would have been well to heed his strategic statement-”never get involved in a land war in Indochina”(the future Vietnam). Compare that to the idiocy of Westmoreland,or even the ever so lauded Colin Powell both political Army hacks, and the shameful result in the needless loss of life of our brave soldiers, again to serve the needs of nation building, oil-investing liberals. Remember LBJ escalated that war. And remember the hateful treatment of our returning soldiers from duty. It took conservatives to end it, conservatives who were anti-war and not in the business of the military industrial complex.

HS. Pure and utter HS. The war ended up being fought because it was not merely enough for the proponents of slavery to confine slavery to the states where it existed as a matter of practicality. Instead, the proponents of slavery took the aggressive stance of insisting on the right to expand slavery to new territories where it did not exist, defeating the "conservative" argument for slavery.

Slavery, its proponents, and its expansionary proponents were evil men who deserved to die. There is no question that Lee was an exemplary soldier, but he was not fighting for a moral cause, and therefore can be counted no hero.

This is pure and utter self serving HS. Slavery was a festering wound dating from centuries before the founding of the republic and the clash over slavery was to come sooner or later. It is complete ignorance of the history leading up to Lincoln's nomination in 1959 to suggest that either Lincoln, the newly formed Republican party, or the preceding Whig party did not have opposition to slavery in some form or another as organizing principles.
