Commutation is the best anyone could hope for in this case. It is almost unheard of to pardon someone who is currently serving a sentence.

It also leaves the door open for a future pardon and restoration of rights, going the other way.
Yes, a pardon would have been better but at least they now get out of jail. It might be hard for them to find a job after their convictions but maybe not since they have a lot of support amongst people.
