The 2009 Darwin celebrations
CMI ^ | Tas Walker

Posted on 01/20/2009 4:17:25 PM PST by GodGunsGuts

Have you heard of the massive celebrations in progress around the world to promote the life and achievements of Charles Darwin?

Nature launched a special issue featuring his life, his science and his legacy.1 The Natural History Museum in London, UK, dedicated a website promoting a national program of events celebrating his scientific ideas.2 Museums, universities and science organizations are networking globally to promote Darwin through exhibitions, lectures and conferences. Events are planned in dozens of countries including the USA, United Kingdom, Australia, China, South Korea, Portugal, Germany, Egypt and Hong Kong.

Stanford University, California, will jet 90 pilgrims along the route of Darwin’s Beagle voyage. Even art exhibitions and music festivals are featuring paintings, sculpture and orchestral works praising Darwin and evolution.3

How odd. Why is the whole world caught up this year in such euphoria over Darwin?

Why haven’t the achievements of other great scientists ever captured the global imagination—scientists like Sir Isaac Newton, Louis Pasteur, James Maxwell, Albert Einstein or Gregor Mendel?

Because Darwin 2009 is not about science. Look at who’s cheering...

Oops, I thought this was the “Darwin Awards” thread, celebrating stupid people who have helpfully removed themselves from the gene pool without reproducing.

“Even art exhibitions and music festivals are featuring paintings, sculpture and orchestral works praising Darwin and evolution.”

1. No eyes have seen the story of the origin of life,
It’s an empty speculation and the obstacles are rife;
But we must explain it somehow, ICR will give us strife–
’Tis ruthless marching on!

Chorus
Gory, gory evolution,
Gory, gory evolution,
Gory, gory evolution,
’Tis ruthless marching on!

2. Now the fit will be survivors, and survivors will be fit,
And survivors will survive to prove the fitness of the fit,
O, this natural selection, it’s so simple, isn’t it?
’Tis ruthless marching on.
Chorus

Slower, with emotion
3. Now we’ve conquered education; evolution rules the land,
God is just imagination; there’s no purpose, right or plan;
As we face a brave new world without a moral high command,
’Tis ruthless marching on.
Chorus

Stanford University, California, will jet 90 pilgrims along the route of Darwin’s Beagle voyage.

This would be spectacular. Much more scenic than the basement that Newton isolated himself in to escape the plague where he invented calculus.

However, I hope that the same attention is given to Newton and Einstein.

True, but they really should take a boat, preferably a historical reproduction with no refrigeration or toilets ;-).

Indeed, let us see just who is celebrating this Darwin Day:

http://www.butler.edu/clergyproject/rel_evolution_weekend_2009.htm

“867 Congregations from all 50 States, the District of Columbia, US Virgin Islands and 14 Countries are scheduled to participate in Evolution Weekend 2009”

These are mostly leftist congregations who start out each prayer with “Our father below...”

The new National Geographic has a cover story about the Centennial of Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of “The Origin of Species”.

Perhaps creationists should ask themselves that question. They are the ones fanning the flames with their constant chant of "Darwinist," "Darwinist," "Darwinist." Next they'll be checking under their beds for Darwinists!

They just can't seem to get enough of Darwin bashing. Perhaps it is they, along with the responses they engender from evolutionary scientists, that are creating the awareness of Darwin that they so oppose.

Thank you.

To all those anti-evolutionists with persecution complexes (I’m not saying that includes anyone on FR, but I have seen lots of them on other sites): inviting ridicule (not just for yourselves, but for all Christians) by refusing to THINK about anything that breaches your comfort zone does not make you a martyr, especially when you’re fighting for a superficial, spiritually inconsequential cause.

I am pro-creation AND pro-evolution. As I have yet to contradict myself off the planet, and as I have yet to lose respect for God’s work, I don’t see why people on the two mainstream sides of this debate think they are irreconcilable.

If Revelations can be taken as a book of symbols, why not Genesis or any other book in the Bible?

Because none of them, unlike Darwin, ever started their own religion.
