President Obama on Thursday ordered the Guantanamo detention facility in Cuba to be closed within a year and that all CIA prisons be shut down.
On his second full day in office, Obama wasted little time in tackling several controversial anti-terrorism policies put in place under the Bush administration.
In addition to closing the Guantanamo facility and the CIA prisons, the new president also ordered a review of detainee policies and interrogation techniques.
“This is me following through on not just a commitment I made during the campaign, but I think an understanding that dates back to our Founding Fathers, that we are willing to observe core standards of conduct, not just when it’s easy, but also when it’s hard,” Obama stated.
The president also issued a memorandum instructing a review of the government’s case against and the status of detainee Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri.
“With those three executive orders and this memorandum the message that we are sending around the world is that the United States intends to prosecute the ongoing struggle against violence and terrorism, and we are going to do so vigilantly; we are going to do so effectively; and we are going to do so in a manner that is consistent with our values and our ideals,” Obama said.
“We think that it is precisely our ideals that give us the strength and the moral high ground to be able to effectively deal with the unthinking violence that we see emanating from terrorist organizations around the world,” he added. “We intend to win this fight. We’re going to win it on our terms.”
Process for dealing with current occupants of same to be developed as we go along.

He tended to the well-being of the enemy. The very indescribably fiendish things that attacked and killed 3,000 civilians on 9/11 and that routinely dismember live captives before killing them.
As I read details of the latter I had the same disbelief that I had at the time of the former: these atrocities don't happen but they did happen -- they are happening.

The surrender of America begins. Those that seek to kill us will consider this as weakness and will take advantage of this opening. When the next attack occurs he will blame everyone but himself. I see more of this coming, get ready.

Yes. Apparently, you aren’t very familiar with how Mexican gangs/cartels recruit in prison. This is the same.
Each case is going to be reviewed. Hopefully they will still stay in jail, but O wants them to have a regular trial. Imagine if they get an OJ type jury? The ones that do go to prison, how would you like to have terrorist in you local facility? How can we assure the city, the workers, the guards etc, their safety? We know these people are willing to blow themselves up? How can we not assume that their terrorists cells here in the states won’t go to these prisons and blow up the whole damn town.
Listening to bottom of the hour news, Obama had to ask his buddy, Greg Craig Gregg, ol’ clinton impeachment defense attorney, if there was a separate EO for handling the occupants.. he was told’ No , that a plan needed to be developed.’
Talk about governing by Clinton proxy,, He has as many Clintons whispering in his ears as Schwarzenegger does Kennedys telling him what to do.
