VT no doubt has a lot of Asian students, it’s probably a moderately high-pressure, competitive environment to begin with, and many Asian students are under a lot of pressure from their families to excel, get super high-paying jobs, etc. The latter things are all good things, but sometimes I think parents can get a little carried away.

My freshman year at the University, I had a roommate from Hong Kong. She would get very upset with herself if she did not get perfect grades. An “A” was not good enough, it must be an “A+”. She would tell me of her failure and said her imperfection was due to a “careless mistake”. She was very hard on herself. She was a brilliant student.
