Mexico to rethink death penalty

The Congress in Mexico has agreed to debate the issue of reinstating capital punishment for some crimes.

The move follows a surge in murders and kidnappings in the country, many linked to drug cartels and organised crime.

Mexico abolished capital punishment in 2005, but recent surveys suggest that 70% of Mexicans are in favour of the death penalty.

The campaign to re-instate judicial executions has, unusually, been led by Mexico's Green Party.

Hundreds of posters, carrying the Green Party logo, and demanding capital punishment for murderers and kidnappers have appeared all over Mexico City.

The party says it is simply conveying the voice of the people, but its opponents say it is playing politics.

Mexico’s Greens must be cut from a different cloth.

Hey, they get something right for a change! A dead criminal breaks no more laws. No executed murderer kills again. How do they do it in Mexico? Firing squad I expect or do they hang people. If ever a land needed capital punishment—Mexico is that land.

You mean if people actually fear they could die, it might make them think twice about killing someone??

Wow, what a concept! And all this time I thought we were just big ole meany meanpants for wanting to ‘murder’ people who killed.

Hanging in the public square could be quite a deterrent. They could sell tickets and TV rights. I’m glad Mexico is possibly waking up. Their politicians and lawmen are under siege. (The honest ones anyway).

That, or they’re getting killed by drug runners destroying what’s left of Mexico’s wilderness - and executing the drug lords helps both the environment and the environmentalists.

This is like putting a band-aid on an open chest wound. I wonder what jury is going to send a drug cartel member to the chair (or gurney or whatever).

Allowing the people to exercise their right to arms and self defense is what is needed.

It would be funny if Mexico makes executions legal when Obama makes them illegal here.

It's somewhat of a deterrent, but the really positive part is that convicted murderers aren't repeat offenders.

Permanent and guaranteed effective rehabilitation.
