Gov's Senate pick: Let's not do this again, shall we?

Considering what the state is up against, the last thing New York needed over the course of the past two months was a distraction from the various fiscal problems afflicting our government and, oh yeah, the people it's supposed to serve.

Instead, Gov. David Paterson's search for a replacement for Hillary Clinton's now-vacated Senate seat has turned into the political equivalent of two 1973 Lincoln Continentals plowing head-on into each other in slow motion — a sight that you want to tear your eyes away from, despite the awful hypnotic quality that makes doing so impossible.

How else to describe the events of Wednesday night and Thursday, when Caroline Kennedy's public image went from awkward but lovable American princess to erratic scandal-magnet? Within three hours of Clinton's confirmation as Barack Obama's secretary of state, Kennedy was apparently out of the running, although you would have had to stay up past midnight to get confirmation of her exit.

Her terse press statement, which cited personal reasons for her decision to pull out, ended several hours of bizarre silence from both Kennedy's camp and Paterson's team.

Because both sides were communicating through the medium of anonymous sources, it's hard to know which of the competing narratives to believe. If you take Kennedy's side, her initial conversation with Paterson on Wednesday ended with his offer of 24 hours to ponder her final decision. If you believe the quotes from unnamed Paterson loyalists, it was Kennedy who asked for an additional day after coming clean about personal matters.

“Gov’s Senate pick: Let’s not do this again, shall we?”

I thought the whole thing was beautiful. I still don’t think the story has entirely unwound. We may have to wait for Patterson’s re-election to write the final chapter.

Democrats; this is how they run their politics, their families, personal lives, many of our states, and now, the Federal Government.

“Is that correct, Greg?”
