To make sure they meet age requirements. I don’t know if a BC is necessary but producing some sort of age verification is probably quite common. Obama’s age isn’t the issue here. It is where, not when, he was born that is the issue. I think the author’s point is that a BC is commonly used should one need to apply for a driver’s license or some security jobs, etc. It would be odd to think Obama has never had to produce one before now.

To prove their actual age. You don’t want 17 year olds playing against 13 year olds.

To establish eligibly. There are age limits, and have been for ages. So long that my Dad, who graduated in 1942, could not play his senior year, because he was too old. He'd been an all city basketball player, but also played football and ran track. His senior year was also the first year the school was open after being created by a consolidation of three rival schools. The rivalry was so intense that they made the school colors a neutral black and white on a temporary basis, rather than try to incorporate the colors of the 3 schools into those of the new one. They are still black and white.

My brother and are both alums of the school as well. When I was in school, a friend had to be an unofficial student manager, because he too was too old to play, not that he was all that good, but good enough to have been on team if he'd been eligible.

My five year old grandson had to show a certified copy of his birth certificate to enroll in church softball this year. Since I wrote the check for it, I asked them why.

It’s the rules was the reply.
