Roethlisberger vs. Warner: A Christian showdown
Kansas City Star ^ | Jan. 19 2009 | Yael T. Abouhalkah

Kurt Warner and Ben Roethlisberger have at least two things in common. Both led their teams on Sunday to the Feb. 1 Super Bowl. And both are strong Christians who don't mind showing it.

Take Warner, the Arizona Cardinals' quarterback who led the team to its NFC Championship on Sunday, 32-25, over the Philadelphia Eagles. The first person Warner thanked in his nationally televised interview was God. He and his wife are known for being devout born-again Christians.

Later Sunday Roethlisberger led the Pittsburgh Steelers to their AFC Championship Game victory, 23-14, over the Baltimore Ravens. Back in 2006, the Austin American-Statesman reported: "Ben Roethlisberger, quarterback of the 2006 Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, wore PFJ (Play For Jesus) on his cleats until the NFL forbade it last year, citing uniform rules." So it may be a bit cheeky, but whom will God favor -- if he really cares -- in the Super Bowl?

Jesus won’t help any of the QB’s. He’ll be one of the guys, relaxing on a couch with a few brewski’s open on his 300 inch monitor.

If I Was Jesus, I’d have some real long hair
A robe and some sandals, is exactly what I’d wear
I’d be the guy at the party, turnin’ water to wine
Yeah me and my disciples, we’d have a real good time.

I plan on watching a football game, not a “Christian showdown”.

Don’t expect them to even mention this throughout the game. Just like when Tony Dungy was in the superbowl, the race card obsessed baiters at ESPN and all the rest of the networks will be 110% completely focused on the fact that Mike Tomlin is black. I’m sure you’ll hear Obama’s name a bizillion times as well brought into this as well.

According to female college students I have taught in the past, who would know, these photos mirror his reputation. But can’t he still be a Christian? I’m impressed by anyone who gives glory to God on national television. But maybe it’s time he got married.

I notice that in the paintings, Jesus always looks Italian. In contrast, I always picture him looking like a young Billy Crystal. Oy vey!

Those were the photos Seattle reporters were scandalized by before the last superbowl. I think it upset them that Roethlisberger likes girls.

Anyway, it doesn’t look like Roethlisberger in the middle photo.

'If' anything, Jesus will be rooting for the Cardinals.

No not because of the Catholic 'Cardinals' of the Church, but because old man Rooney (Steeler owner) conspired with George Hallas (and the NFL) to get the Chicago Cardinals kicked out of town.

Though also an original team and fellow 'founder' of the NFL, like Da Bears and Steelers, the Chicago Cardinals, were treated like a red headed step-child. It was like they didn't even exist. It finally worked, Hallas got his way and after 1959 the Chicago Cardinals moved to St. Louis and Chicago became a one football team town with - Da Bears.

Not that Cardinal's owner Bidwell was a saint, he was generally disliked. His family still owns a race track (horses) in Chicago (Cicero, IL actually). But that's irrelevant here, he and his Chicago Cardinals got a raw deal from the NFL.

Soooooo, Jesus and me will be rooting for the Cardinals :-)

The 'north side' Bears played at Wrigley Field. The 'south side' Cardinals played at the old Comisky Park.

I always hate when athletes say after big games that god wanted them to win. God doesn’t care about your silly football game!

“I always hate when athletes say after big games that god wanted them to win. God doesn’t care about your silly football game!”

I don't think that is what they say. Rather they give thanks to God for what has just happened, i.e. a touchdown.

In my coaching years we never prayed to win, but that we each would do our best, for strength to give it our all and to be safe. We had a little motto that if each player “did his very, very best, God would do the rest.” Not the best theology, but the kids liked it and would say it to each other.

Well Big Ben seems to be a good guy and had nice things to say about Kurt. I like Kurt better. Go Cardinals.
