Stimulus is Too Heavy on Spending, Says Growing Number of Senators

Some Senate Democrats are joining the Republican chorus in opposition to the $900 billion economic stimulus package.

President Obama is stressing bipartisanship when it comes to the $900 billion economic stimulus plan being considered in the Senate, and he may get it -- in unity of opposition.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said he "can't believe that the president isn't embarrassed about" the stimulus packages that have passed the House and the Senate appropriations and finance committees.

"It'll need to change if it'll do any good. I mean, things like $150 million honey bee insurance and $650 million to buy government employees cars is not what the American public had in mind," McConnell said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Republicans appear to have the support of some Democrats, including North Dakota Sen. Kent Conrad, head of the Budget Committee, and Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson.

Senate Republicans are offering an alternative bill as early as Monday. It shifts the balance more toward tax cuts and less on spending, and targets the housing market as key to the economic turnaround.

Go GOP and conservative Democrats! Don't roll over!

SAVE the country -- because it really IS that important. The Obama/Pelosi so-called "stimulus" bill not only will NOT stimulate the economy, but it will wreck it!

And while Obama is pushing for this pork laden bill, he is cutting defense by 10%, or $55B dollars, resulting in the loss of thousands of defense related jobs.

See this article:

Obama Proposes Military Funding Cuts (10% cut of defense budget, or $55B)

If the Senators feel this way, imagine how the taxpayers must feel. We’re the ones who are going to have to pay for this Obamafiasco. The Oinker Overspending Act of 2009!

Dems now changing their tune. Will accept suggestions, and maybe will compromise. Trying to lure in some weak-minded Republicans. And, we all know, there are plenty of those!

Probably, too many people who are already 'skilled' in those jobs anyway.

Not to mention, probably a hefty percentage of them are male+white.

Best not to give them more work.

Stimulus is Too Heavy on Spending

In other shocking news of the weird, water is wet and pigs like mud.

Speaking of pork, maybe this "growing number of senators have actually looked into this trillion dollar spending spree. A sharp FReeper posted this on an earlier thread. If you have normal blood pressure, check it out...do the math on the money spent and number of jobs created and see what liberal math is all about:

IMO, the worst of all world would be for Republican Senators to tweak the porkulus bill, then vote for this pig, and then give “bipartisan” cover to Obama and Democrats. And then when all the cascading ugliness of the bill following passage, the bill will henceforth and forever more be refered to as the “bipartisan” stimulus bill that wrecked the country!

I say, let Democrats own the porkulus as one would own a millstone around one’s neck.

Unfortunately the 'Super O' may prevail in his Great Porkfest of 2009 . . .

The media are supporting him 110%. Obama will keep trying. And if he succeeds in appointing Judd Gregg (Republican) as Commerce Secretary, the GOP would lose it ability to filibuster. Essentially, Gregg is acting as a trojan horse for Obama. The New Hampshire Governor may determine what happens next.

The sad thing to me, is with all the leftist pork in “Porkulus”, the one they mention cutting is the funding for the bees. This is a major factor in our food growing capabilities. Without bees, and finding a way to protect them, our grocery store shelves are going to shrink dramatically, in both amounts and varieties of foodstuffs. and i’m not just talking about sweet stuffs. Bees are a critical link in the pollination and the bounty of our crops, and that means more than honey comb cereal, it means al kinds of fruit and vegetables as well. It would be a bad mistake to cut the money for the bees, IMO.

I completely agree — the Dems would throw a few crumbs to the Republcians, but the bill would still be essentially the same, and by Republicans voting for it, it would deny Republicans to moral high ground of standing against a bill that pushed us into depression, instead of stimulating the economy.

They should have menioned the money to ACORN, for the arts, etc. Lot of pork they could have mentioned.

I am all for bees and I agree with you in their importance, but I don’t know what “bee insurance” means, it may not be something to help beekeepers.

"Stimulus is Too Heavy on Spending, Says Growing Number of Senators"

And too light on "stimulus". In fact it contains no "stimulus" at all.

I couldn't agree more. all Republican should be seen doing with this national tragedy and deliberate government take over of private enterprise is venomously opposing it.

Sorry, when the GOP votes this down in its entirety, they'll get some “cred”. They are just looking for their own piece of the pork IMHO.

...and as international concern builds against this joke of a stimulus bill as well.

Maybe those who are still in their Messiah worshiping trance will wake up when they realize the world suddenly doesn't like the messiah anymore.
