The New York Times managed to get the following ad hominems into yesterdays immigration editorial: racialist extremism, nativism of fringe right-wingers, white-supremacist views and (that old standby of the anti-sovereignty left) Know-Nothings.
The editorial was a hysterical response to last weeks National Press Club event, where a group of immigration-reform advocates observed that if the GOP is ever again to become a majority party, it has to get real about defending our borders.

Immigration is all about votes for Democrats.
They will try to open the floodgates and bury the Republicans.
Maybe we should just get into the habit of calling it “The New York Times, Leninist-Trotskyite”.
I’ve been a supporter of border control for long enough that being called a racist doesn’t even make me flinch anymore.
McClame will lead the way.
Bay Buchanan of Team America will be on Bill O’Reilly this evening discussing this very article in the N.Y. Times and the N.Y. Times misinformation and distortion of truth. On Bill O’Reilly, FOX News, at 8pm eastern (I think — definitely in prime time on FOX News, check your local listings.)
Yep, Dems just want votes, thats it, thats all they really care about, for their own power and control.
And so help me, if Republicans cave in and sell their soul to try to get their own “hispanic voters”, they will likely lose more voters than they gain. I know I will be gone.
If the GOP goes soft on Illegal Aliens...it will cease to be a party....
Better to have the left call pro-Americans “Know-Nothings” than the right call the GOP “the Whigs”
I see Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim is getting his money’s worth....
If the GOP stays soft on illegal aliens, then I won't have anybody to vote for.

I suspect the times editorial was more of an attempt at intimidating the left before the next attempt at amnesty. They know that we don’t care that they call us racists.
The last amnesty attempt wasn’t stopped by conservatives alone. It took liberals and lots of them.
I urge the Times to head for the tribal areas of Pakistan where they can set up their own tribal compound.
I hate to be negative, but your use of the future tense is not realistic. The floodgates have BEEN open for a long time now, and the demographic shift has already occured.
. It's not a question of preventing the Democrat gerrymander, it's only a question of what do now that it exists.
And no, I haven't any bright ideas in that regard, but I do know it's time to start thinking...
Thats true....esp the Senate....where Democrat votes killed amnesty...making up for the pro-illegal GOP supporters
I think the left will have a bigger problem trying to force amnesty this time. The economy is worse, and the claims of “illegals doing jobs Americans wont do” will not fly. Many Democrat voters are against amnesty (in fact most Obama voters polled were against amnesty)
Rich encourages The Times to sexually satisfy itself. And not the easy way.
Given how rarely the Times has anything nice to say about Republicans, it’s striking how frequently they praised Jorge Arbusto and Juan McCain on immigration. Whenever the Times praises “conservative” leaders, it’s time to seek medical attention for the knives in our backs.
All the news that’s fit to spit...
This entire debate is based on the false assumption that the majority of Hispanics favor high immigration, illegal immigration and amnesty. It is simply not true. The GOP has done an incompetent job of explaining the conservative position on these issues largely because the GOP does not support conservative positions.
Hispanics should be natural fit for the GOP but the strategy of pandering to them over amnesty proved horribly wrongheaded.
