Discovered device off man's leg Monday

Salinas police have arrested a 63-year-old registered sex offender who cut off his tracking device earlier this week.

Edward Lee Harvey, a homeless registered sex offender required to wear a GPS tracking device, allegedly cut off the device and left it at a home in the 100 block of Russell Road, police said.

Officers noticed on Monday that Harvey had been at the home for a long time and when they arrived the check on him they found the device without him.

Investigators were then put on the lookout for Harvey, who was found Thursday around 11 a.m. in the Harden Ranch Shopping Center.

Harvey was arrested and booked into Monterey County Jail on suspicion of a parole violation and vandalism for cutting the tracking device.

He should have put it on a stray dog, or a mule deer.

he’d still get caught, but the authorities would have had fun finding the tracker and chasing it down.

It’s something The Stainless Steel Rat would have done!

I always thought you had to have an official address as part of your conditional release. If you couldn’t have one they violated you ?

Least thats what the parolee I knew was worried about when he lost his happy home.

So how is it that he is “homeless” yet left it at a home that he has access to ? Hmm.......

Smoke bombs, vomit gas, sleepy pills, an electronic computer scrambler, and a .60 caliber recoilless rocket launcher. The usual stuff...

Oh man, I used to LOVE Harry Harrison! The Stainless Steel Rat and the Deathworld series were some of my favorites...

In fact, many years ago, I came to the realization that Australia was the inspiration for Deathworld. I mean, EVERYTHING in Australia will kill you! They've got one of the only venomous mammals in the world (duckbilled platypus), the majority of the top 10 deadly snakes in the world, the Sydney Funnelweb Spider, and if they chase you into the water, while you're dodging salt water crockodiles, look out for the sharks, but try not to get killed by a box jellyfish (or this other one that's so small you can't hardly see them, less than 1" total, but they can kill you). And don't get me started on the blue ringed octopus!

Apparently, the police and his parole officer considered that block his home:

"left it at a home in the 100 block of Russell Road"

Highly effective and much cheaper than a GPS tracking device.

Seems like it would be smart (and easy) to make these things so that cutting the band either sets off an alarm at the monitoring station or kills the device so that they know it has been cut off.

Some of these tracking devices can tell if they are removed.

Some do have tamper switches.

The County was probably trying to cut corners. You get what you pay for.

Criminals, tracking and Australia, too? What a coincidence!
