“Why do people pray to saints when they can pray to Jesus? “

In my experience - this continuous debate boils down to whether or not you believe deceased christians are capable of intercessory prayer.

Most christians (not all) agree that while we are on earth, we pray directly to Jesus as well as praying FOR each other.
And when we do it, we don’t consider it an insult to Him because we figure the more prayer the better.

Likewise, If I feel I’m in the need of some help, I can do both - I can pray directly to Jesus, and I can also ask others to pray for me.
We see prayer requests here on FReeper all the time.

Catholics do not believe this ceases upon death.
Catholics believe that souls who behold the beatific vision - who are living in heaven with God are also performing intercessory prayer for souls on earth.

So it isn’t really “worshipping” the saints as we have been accused of.
We are asking for intercession.

Some good Catholic should send this article to the Pope so he can tell the Bishops in Mexico to get their act straightened out.
